Messenger program for intranet?
I am looking for any simple instant messaging system suitable for an intranet. It would be nice if the messenger program is serverless like NT Messenger or Hermes Messenger for Windows but a server type messenger like AIM is ok if I can have my own server too that is also inside the intranet also. It would be really nice if it worked on both Linux and Windows. Does anyone know of such a sytem? If I could use AIM, that would be ideal since both clients exist. Damon Register
Damon,
as far as I know, there is no open source or freeware product available. If you want to invest some money, JabCast (http://www.jabcast.com) is probably the best product, according to a test. I've not tested it myself but heard some good things about it. My last information is, that it costs about $5000 for a server license with up to 100 users.

sorry to hear that

Thanks for the answer but this will not do. I am trying to find something really simple and cheap (free). Are you familiar with NT Messenger? DGDR's Hermes Messenger? In order to write KAIM or other messenger programs for Linux, the writers would have to know the server protocol but has anyone ever written any kind of server for Linux Is there anyone on the list who has any experience in messaging programming? How simple do you want? In a land long before time there existed something called talk. talk username would give you a split screen chat. Even lower tech would be write I think windows versions exist for talk but you may need to look for it. Talk in many versions is on the Cds. The downside is that it won't work if the other user is offline but then that's what email is for. It isn't fancy. Nick

I visited their web site and it seems that it is a client only for the systems such as AIM and ICQ. I need one that is serverless or one with its own server Damon Register

Have you tried winpopup? There is LinPopUp too. Obviously you need to have samba up and running, but messages should go. Note that on Win9x/ME you need the winpopup program running if you want to receive messages, while on NT the winpopup program will popup by itself. You could also try to set up your own IRC server. Funny how so many people never heard of this. It's a GPL IM system with server and clients for linux and windows. I have it running in production for more than a year now. It is funny. No one else mentioned it.

I am just getting started. It is perfect. ICQ will sell a corportate one for big bucks but this one is free. It is great. If anyone else wants to setup an intrante messenger system, this is the way to go! Damon Register

Thanks. This seems to be exactly what I am looking for. I already installed the Win2k one (I didn't have any SuSE machines ready yet) but so far I haven't gotten the jabberd server to work. I notice from their mailing list that there are many others who have the same problem but no answers yet. I am still waiting for a reply from that list. Have you had any experience with jabberd on a Windows platform? With no luck there so far, I guess I will push ahead with trying to get a SuSE pc running and try the Linux version of jabberd. Has anyone on the list done that? Damon Register

I'm using jabber as my primary Instant Messaging System for a year now. But, I have no experience in setting up the server. I'm using Psi as client on Linux and Windows and jabber.ru as server. You may also try to contact guys (or, being more specific, a girl) at jabber.ru for a piece of advice.

I really appreciate your help here. Jabber is exactly what I need. This advice was so useful that I would like to send you a T-shirt with a Lockheed airplane (F-117, F-22, etc.) on it. I have had only some success with the Windows jabberd but I gave up and installed with SuSE 8.0 and it works perfectly. I guess it would be nice if I could get both working but I don't really care too much as long as it works with SuSE. Damon Register
