I think however, that it might be better to discuss this issue at suse-kde, what I will do. Op vrijdag 31 januari 2003 09:23, schreef Baris Erbas:
Hi, I installed KDE3.1 and eerything went well. I even restarted my computer without any problems whatsoever. However, when I turned on the computer this morning the only X enviroment I see is the default(which is not KDE probably only an xterm) and I see all the users on the left hand side(such as root, nobody, and all the deamons). When I type "startkde" on the xterm window KDE starts. What could have I done to get this problem?
The only possibility I can think of is that I deleted all the /tmp files .mcop files just to get KDE work without any problems..
hope somebody can give me some advice...
thx all!
Hello Richard and Baris, I encountered this problem as well after installation of KDE3.1 (running SuSE v8.0 Pro.). Once I finished the install I ran SuSEconfig as root and was greeted with a message saying that /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc had been modified by the user and that SuSEconfig would not touch it but would create a copy of the file called kdmrc.SuSEconfig. Renaming kdmrc.SuSEconfig to kdmrc corrected the problem. I have noticed however that changes I make in Control Center > System Administration > Login Manager (such as setting a custom background or setting 'Show Users' to None in the Users tab) are being ignored. I'm not sure if this problem is related to the original Login Screen issue or not, but I suspect it may be. Hope this helps. Jesse

In order to make Login changes (KDM) stick after changing to 3.1 I had to: link /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc to /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc (This tip provided by Daniel Eckl) I still get the warning from SuSEconfig, but I know the reason so its not a problem. -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
