Re: [SLE] "mms is not a registered protocol" ???

Hi, everyone.
I am having no luck playing video clips from the following site:
http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/sights/
When I click on any of the video clips (384K option) I get a message that says "mms is not a registered protocol."
I'm using Kaffeine/Xine.
Is there a file/codec I need to get or am I just out of luck viewing clips from this site?
Well, since this site won't even work on my Powerbook which has both Realplayer and WMP installed .. It may very well not work with Kaffeine/Xine. They flat out said their videos were not "available to Mac users" and when I clicked on the link again it brought up WMP by itself but couldn't connect to the server. It sat there for at least 5 minutes before I just closed the program. It appears that if your machine doesn't return Windows as the OS .. they are just not interested in letting you view the video on the site. Kind of a pisser. -- "There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat Earth in order to defend religious faith."

It does. I just viewed the 364kbps clip from 7/7 in kaffeine linked from konqueror with no use of browser id strings or anything. Works like a charm. Maybe your computer has something against soccer? :)

I hope not. Besides hockey.. Soccer is the only other sport I can stand to watch. :) -- "There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat Earth in order to defend religious faith."

I too was able to view the videos from this site using Konqueror & kaffeine. Takes you to a an "untrusted remote site", but there appeared to be no problems with the clips. Me too...nothing else works since a clean 9.1 install, but I guess my machine knows I love soccer.

You are such a fibber (is that a word, at least sounds better than liar). You know you've never had it so good since installing 9.1! ;o) -- --- KMail v1.6.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Lee, Anders, and others who answered.... I tried Konqi as you suggested and, sure enough, the clips played just fine on my system with Kaffeine/Xine. Now I wonder why they won't play using Mozilla 1.6, my regular browser. Is there a work-around for the "mms is not a registered protocol" error message or is that just a Windoze-related problem that's not fixable? Thanks for letting me know that Konqi provides a means to view the clips! :o) Gil

I had a similar problem with RSTP protocol and was able to fix it in the following manner: Open Mozilla and enter the url of "about:config" without the quotes. This should provide you with an extensive list of preference settings. Right click the screen and choose new -> string from the menu that appears. Enter the preference name of "network.protocol-handler.app.mms", again without the quotes. In the next screen, enter the full path to the program you want to handle the protocol. Restart Mozilla Last but not least ... let us know if this worked ;-) Louis

I'd also like to add my thanks for this. I didn't know about the "about:config" thing. Just used a slightly modified version of what you explained above to get kmail to handle the "mailto" protocol as well - something that has been bugging me for ages 8)

That works fine in firefox. How do you get konqueror to work? Nothing so far in the config gets it working. /opt/kde3/share/services/mms.protocol contents. I tried this procedure (in Firefox) for a site that uses mms for a radio broadcast. I set XMMS as the program. After I made this change, XMMS launches, but the transmission does not begin. XMMS opens a file manager, and asks me to choose the file (from my home directory) to

Hi. Just checking.... Do you have this rpm installed: kaffeine-mozilla-0.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm I have a total of 5 rpms installed to get Kaffeine working properly. Also, check the e-mail from Louis that appeared about the same time as yours. His suggestion to me for getting rid of this "mms" message worked great in Mozilla. I would assume it should also work with Firefox. Good luck! :o) Gil
