Playing DVDs with Kaffeinr/xine
Hello, I would like to play DVDs with kaffeine. I have the following installed, but kaffeine still tells me it can't play DVDs: libdvdnav-0.1.9-63 libdvdread-0.9.4-146 libdvdcss-1.2.8-1 xine-lib-0.99.rc3a-106.8 What am I missing? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

SuSE rpms are not compiled with support for playing dvd's, for legal & patent reasons. Uninstall xine, kaffine, etc. Then download new suse rmps with dvd stuff enabled from packman at: http://packman.links2linux.org/index.php4?action=cat&cat=1 Install & enjoy! One note though; I find xine uses far less resources, and better playback, then kaffine, even though kaffine is just a front-end to xine. YMMV. Regards, Mark

That did it -- thanks. One minor difficulty. The kaffeine rpm listed for SuSE 9.1 requires qt 3.3.2 and SuSE 9.1 has qt 3.3.1. So, I just installed the 9.0 version. Looks like this version of kaffeine has at least one improvement besides DVD support. When playing a CD it shows the title of all tracks right away instead of waiting for the track top be played. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

One down-side I just noticed. Goom seems to have lost some of its effects. One thing I don't see is the oscilloscope-like effect. Another is the shorter wavy lines. Also it will go for a while with a completely blank screen. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

I would have to agree this the above statement. ogle is great under SuSE 8.2. Tried installing it in SuSE 9.1 but it was unstable. More times it would crash then play. That is only one of the problems I've had with SuSE 9.1. -- SuSE Linux 8.2 (i586) ---- 2.4.20-4GB-athlon --- Mon 05/31/04 08:05 8:05am up 11:14, 3 users, load average: 0.57, 0.37, 0.22

I did this under 9.0 and get a libslang-utf8.so.1 dependancy. I tried to instal the slang RPM from the 9.1 distro, but I get libslang.so.1 dependancy messages. You need to install slang from the suse cds or the ftp site. Regards- Jim Bonnet

This will not work. He needs to download a version of xine for SuSE 9.0. libslang-utf8.so.1 is not provided in a SuSE package for 9.0, AFAIK. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

I don't know but the xine version for SuSE 9.0 plays DVDs just fine for me. I don't know why you would need the other library unless you just want to live on the edge. If that *is* the case, try it and see. But, keep track of *exactly* what you do so you can recover easily. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
