autofs daemon no longer starts
Here is what happens when I try to start the autofs daemon... # /etc/init.d/autofs start Starting service automounter ("files nis" does not provide any mounts) skipped This is SuSE 9.1 with all the latest updates via YOU. It prevents me from using mu USB floppy drive. Can anyone point me in the right direction? P.S. I had no problem with this yesterday -- just started after a reboot due to updating to the latest kernel. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

Check /etc/auto.master /media /etc/auto.misc is what mine says. Then check /etc/auto.misc cdrom -fstype=auto,ro :/dev/cdrom dvd -fstype=auto,ro :/dev/dvd This lets autofs mount the cdrom as /media/cdrom and the dvd as /media/dvd. Hope that helps with the general idea. /etc/auto.master can have multiple lines if other than /media is needed. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Thanks for the input, but I don't think that applies to my situation -- I think my real problem may be with hotplug, or its interaction with autofs. I looked at a backup of my etc directory (from the time when all was working well) and my auto.master and auto.misc files were empty (except for comments). Also, my cdrom/dvd and regular floppy mount automatically just fine. It is only the usb floppy that gives me problems. Perhaps autofs isn't even needed. I don't remember if it started OK before, it is just something I noticed wasn't starting while trying to figure out why I can't get to my usb floppy vi "My Computer" on the Desktop. /var/log/messages looks encouraging when the device is plugged into a usb port: Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon kernel: usb 5-6.4: new full speed USB device using address 7 Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon kernel: ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: qh f6804380 (#0) state 1 Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon kernel: usb 5-6.4: Product: USB Floppy Drive Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon kernel: usb 5-6.4: Manufacturer: Y-E DATA Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon /etc/hotplug/usb.agent[14066]: need a device for this command Sep 4 07:49:56 avalon kernel: scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon kernel: Vendor: Y-E DATA Model: USB-FDU Rev: 5.01 Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon kernel: SCSI device sdb: 2880 512-byte hdwr sectors (1 MB) Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon kernel: sdb: assuming Write Enabled Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon kernel: sdb: assuming drive cache: write through Sep 4 07:49:57 avalon /etc/hotplug/block.agent[14126]: try 1 while waiting for /block/sdb's bus_id 6:0:0:0 Sep 4 07:49:58 avalon /etc/hotplug/block.agent[14126]: try 2 while waiting for /block/sdb's bus_id 6:0:0:0 Sep 4 07:49:59 avalon kernel: sdb: unknown partition table Sep 4 07:49:59 avalon kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sdb at scsi6, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Sep 4 07:49:59 avalon kernel: Attached scsi generic sg2 at scsi6, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0 Sep 4 07:49:59 avalon kernel: USB Mass Storage device found at 7 Sep 4 07:49:59 avalon /etc/hotplug/block.agent[14126]: new block device /block/sdb I can mount it manually: mount /dev/sdb /mnt # works just fine -- Robert C. <clip> Well, I never figured out what the problem was, but after a reboot everything is OK. autofs is NOT running but the usb floppy now shows up in "My Computer" on the Desktop. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net
