Grreeeat.. Finally got around to install 8.0 on my routing machine - old Celeron 500 with HP's DVD drive.. And got fingered by 8.0 DVD.. I couldnt boot from it. Pulled out my old 7.1 DVD - boots nicely. 8.0 - drive reports error and goes for HDD. Checked on other computer - 8.0 DVD boots.. WTF? 8( Also its really pissing me off that SuSE keep using really shitty CD media - ones that got scratched after one-two uses easily.. How come? Its not like that stuff worth tons of money to get.. 8( I mean i dont have problems to copy entire 7 CD sets all the time to preserve the original - but it feels kind of funky - price of ownership for SuSE"s Linux comes to be in fact a bit more than Win2K - couldnt could how many times i used their CD - and it still doesnt have any scratches. Yeah it doesnt come with tons of software, but i also not up to buying it every 6-12 months to get new release (so i wouldnt have to spend rest of my life resolving all the issues, isnt it?.. Not that i am leaning into the side of Windows heck no. I just really wish SuSE would pay some attention to such things as media quality. Sighs.

There have been booting problems with some older DVD drives... http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wessels_pioneerdvd.html

I've never heard that our media is especially shitty until now. -- -ckm

Yep, i know about it. Except this one isnt listed there. Its just some really weird DVD drive that i took from HP box that i scrapped. What bugs me - how come 7.1 DVD boots properly and 8.0 isnt.. Different stamping technique? 8( I am following that suggestion to install from CDs of course - but entire point of getting Pro version is to get DVD 8)

Ever saw what CD's from 7.1 looks like after year of use and dozen of complete installations/software package installations? 8) I really missing old CD drives that Sun been using about 10 years ago - ones with caddies.. I know that its partly problem of CD drives that disks getting scratched, but i just noticed that first few CDs from 7.1 nearly worn out where Win2K (just reinstalled it on fresh computer that i built yesterday) still shiny. I.e i am not blaming anyone - just curious why its going like that.

I have every SuSE CD from 6.1 onwards, and a few older RedHat cds, and all of them have seen substantial use and all of them are in usable condition still. How are you treating your cds? regards Anders

Well they just sits in same CD folder as they came in package. Never laying around or something. I just used to get exactly same troubles with cheap unnamed CD-Rs - they all got scratched just from being played in music center (its CD changer, so they just keep sitting there, without been moved around for quite a while). I know that its normal for CDs to wear off from constant use - but it just doesnt go on same rate - i mean compare gold stamp CDs and regular cheap white ones - difference is very visible.
I just installed an RPM of this file sharing software but when it loads up it does not connect. It just sits there. Does the Suse firewall block it? How does my system need to be configured to use gtk-gnutella? Jim

Sergei, I think you just answered your own question, if you will reread your last mail above. See it yet? The part where you talk about the dozen's of installations you made with SuSE and only using your W2K hardly any at all? Usually if you don't use a cd much, it is not likely to get scratched, but use them a lot and they are sure to see some wear & tear over a period of time. True the caddy type cdroms were easier on the cd's, but the only problem I have ever had out of scratched cd's came from my mishandling. So you read that these are just the ones we know about...the list isn't complete. -- -ckm
