[S.u.S.E. Linux] Shell Acount
Hi All! This may sound like a dumb question, but how can I tell if I have a shell account with my ISP? Right now I'm using baynet for email and surfing. That's all. Best way is probably to ask... otherwise try telnetting into one of the other computers they have.. maybe shells.baynet.de (that's how my ISP does it) or where ever your email resides... On 04-Jun-98 Jim Hatridge wrote:

Hi, I have used RedHat Linux (V4.2) before trying SuSE V5.2. Under RedHat the program Xboing produces sound while under SuSE there is none. Does anyone know what my problem may be? I'm using a kernel with sound built-in. Near as I can tell the kernels are compiled the same. Other programs such as xpat2 will produce sound and I can play mod files and cat *.au to /dev/audio. Also, I have a program which uses ncurses to control where the curser is located in a terminal. Under RedHat it works as expected but under SuSE the display of information to the termianl is not correct. Is there something basically different between the ncurses between RedHat and SuSE. I've even recompiled the program under SuSE. Oh, one more thing. I run quake2 under both RedHat and SuSE. Does anyone know why the save files from RedHat cannot be used under SuSE and those from SuSE cannot be used by RedHat. I get a seg falt when trying to load a saved game from the other linux version. Well, that's all for now. Thank you for your time. Hi, Three problems I'm having with SuSE 5.2: 1) Xboing does not have sound. Sound compiled into the kernel. cat *.au >/dev/audio works as well as xpat2 give sounds. Does anyone use xboing with sound? 2) I have a program which uses ncurses to control where the curser is located in a terminal. Under RedHat it works as expected but under SuSE the display of information to the termianl is not correct. Is there something basically different between the ncurses used in RedHat and SuSE. Does anyone know why the save files from RedHat cannot be used under SuSE and those from SuSE cannot be used by RedHat. I get a seg falt when trying to load a saved game from the other linux distribution. Thank you for your time. Well redhat 5.x is glibc, so that may be the reason your save games won't play in a libc5 dist. As for cut and paste in an xterm/rxvt, I think the package is called xcb. And sound generally works better as a module. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

One way is to call them and ask. Another pretty good indicator is to telnet to them and see if you get a login prompt. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Use minicom or some other terminal emulation program instead of pppd to connect to your ISP. Enter your username and password when prompted. After entering your password, watch to see if what appears to be random (garbage) is sent to your screen. If so, your ISP is trying to negotiate LCP and thus it would appear if they don't provide you with a shell. But, if you get some kind of prompt, try doing a few UNIX commands such as ls, vi, etc. If you have a shell, you should be able to do them. -Rod On Thu, 4 Jun 1998, Jim Hatridge wrote:
