SPAM: Detailed Instructions For Installing Downloaded Binary Applications
I have downloaded two binary formatted applications, Scilab and Adobe Reader, but cannot find any guidance in SuSE Help on installing the programs so I can use them. Have gone to Novell's website but no help there either. Is there a good book addressing such SuSE problems? Alternatively, could someone spell out the needed steps for a Linux newbie? Thanks, W. D. It's deceptively simple. Assume we have a file called bin1, which we downloaded from website acme.com: chmod +x ./bin1 ./bin1 done! The names or extensions of the file are not significant in determining whether they are executable or not. Many binary installers are actually big shell scripts containing "shar"-encoded data in them. For these you can run them with: sh bin1 'sh' is, on Linux systems, normally a symlink to /bin/bash, but it may also be some other "Bourne-compatible" shell. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. No, you need guidance from Scilab and Adobe instead, as you got the files from them. SuSE or Novell have nothing to do with them. As for the Adobe reader, you can instead use the adobe reader that came with the distro, you don't need to jump any loops except to fire up yast, select adeobe reader and click install. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Scilab is part of the SuSE distro. You can install it in the usual way. That is pereferable to installing the scilab binary from inria. Regards, -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704
