I have been told by my isp that iI can't run linux on my new internet connection because their are no drivers for linux. What I want to know is , is it possible to run NT4 as the Inertnet connection and server for the other 5 computers (windoze98) and have suse 6.4 as the web server and mail server. As I am sort of new to in house networking are there any recomened books and howtos I should read. What 'drivers' are they talking about? __ _ / / (_)__ __ ____ __ / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / Jerry L Kreps /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Yes, but it will take add-on software to the NT box for NAT and redirecting ports to your mail and web server. What type of internet connection doesn't have drivers? Is it an internal xDSL or cable card? If it is something external that it is connected to your computer via ethernet, then most likely you can get Linux connected. As Greg says NAT is waht you want to share your winNT system and run your webhost/PO/SMTP etc on you rlinux system. Have a look at Sygate www.sybergen.com it's a very good NAT program that can run as a service on WinNT 4 (SP4+). I use it on 20+ systems and never had a problem with it. If your ISP is "free" they probably want to run an ActiveX application with ads while you're connected. But it's not a driver... If you signed up for a DSL connection, then DSL modem is just an external device that connects to your Ethernet card. They may refuse to _support_ you, but there's no reason for the DSL modem not to work. And again there's no driver in the picture. The bottom line, what exactly is your/ISP's problem? --ET.

There are internal ADSL modems now that as far as I know are not supported under Linux. Thank god PacBell couldn't get their's working under my temp NT install or I would have been stuck. They gave up and left me an external modem. Not So , I have Dial up with netcom and can access the internet under linux , no problems. You will need a modem suported by linux , ie no winmodems , then install and setup wvdial for dial up access. Then use netscape ect... You can set up a linux baox with wvdial (use the german sight script) and ipmasq and use it as a gateway so all your toher boxes can access the internet by going throgh the linux ip masq box. Others are using DSL and CABLE MODEMS with linux as well. Post more info and I am sure somne one here can help/ At 12:21 PM 5/4/2000 -0000, B.Rumsey wrote:

Two possibilities: (1) They are idiots who don't know what they are talking about. This is quite likely. (2) They are using Windows NT as a firewall and have unusually crappy software that is nowhere near adequate for an ISP - and there is special software, Windows-only, that must be installed on EVERY computer that tries to go through that firewall; and they are idiots who in this specific case DO know what they are talking about. (But only idiots would try to run an ISP this way.)

Yes, it is possible. But with the sofware available at a price reasonable for home users either you have no firewall, or "inertnet" is about right - and you have to install custom drivers on EVERY machine, which probably means the SuSE server doesn't have internet access. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
