I use sendmail and yes I did check under /var/spool/mqueue: the message is there until sendmail is activated (daemon) and then I see it going... but it never reached my novo@uiuc.edu account, while others do! Anyway, after several hours at changing several configuration files I decided to remove sendmail and re-install it. Now, everything is fine... but I wonder what was wrong. If you use this type (If you use it accidently, well there could be a place with unsend mails) send a mail and look into the "waiting" mails, read the headers for further guesses, maybe there is a hint in there.
