From what was my Suse 9.2 machine I ran an apt upgrade a few days ago. This, for the first time introduced me to the delights of KDE 3.4 but it also left my X server in a very shaky state. The system 'locks up', I can still move the mouse cursor but I cannot select anything nor is the keyboard recognised. I am able to ssh into this machine and running top shows Xorg at 99% + cpu usage. Xorg can go manic like this at any time, during the KDE set up, after 5 minutes of work or a few hours later. It's certainly not a stable as it was, with an uptime in the 'many weeks' category. I probably am not experienced enough to fully understand the intricacies of apt and I am far from bright enough to anywhere near fully understand X. Is there a simple fix I should try using apt? Failing this then I need to try and fix X. Firstly I would need to figure out what's wrong. I have looked in the /var/log/X files and I can't see anything like an [ee] error. Advise please on where I should now look and what to look out for. Thanks in advance. -- Colin Murphy, a man for all seasons, especially pepper.

It quite possibly might not be X playing up but is just suffering. As part of the upgrade I upgraded the kernel but didn't prepare the boot loader with this news, so I've spent a little while fixing that, and, in the process, re-installed the X server from the DVD. This hasn't helped and the machine still locks up, leaving the mouse cursor moving but not accepting any input. ssh'ing into the machine shows Xorg running at + 99% cpu usage. My default wm is KDE but this behaviour has also happened with Windowmaker, which I tried as a test. What does seem stable is running my applications over 'ssh -X', I write this in kmail in a session thats been up all day. Are there any clues in this? I need help with where to look further so I can figure out what the problem is and get working on a solution. Thanks in advance. -- Colin Murphy, a man for all seasons, especially pepper.

Hi Colin, I had almost similar problems. & obviously enough, they were random in nature. The only solution i found till now is to kill X server & restart it. Then it comes back to normal. BTW, whats "normal" processor usage of X? -- regards, makuchaku --- http://makuchaku.blogspot.com Linux... Life... Freedom...
