[opensuse] FrameMaker filters/conversion
Hi all, I know this may be a little off-topic - but here goes. I've got a bunch of old .fm (FrameMaker) files produced under FrameMaker on Solaris way back when. Does anybody know if there are any filters/converters that would allow me to read and edit those under OpenSuSE 11.x? Thanks. I don't have a ready solution for you (investigated these things looong ago), but I have a good hunch about which path might prove most likely to succeed: mif. Googled it and got a few hits that might prove interesting: <http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+framemaker+mif&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a> My guess is that chances are slim for finding something that can both parse and output pure framemaker files (which version, BTW?), unless you install FM for Linux (assuming you have it) and the files are the right version, or you get a current version of FM to run using Wine, CrossoverOffice or some virtualization software. Going via .mif format sounds like the way to go if you can't run FM itself. BR, Gudmund -- This message and any replies to it is scanned by http://www.fra.se. Me too. I used HP-UX with FrameMaker. But I also have a Windows version. So I use that to export to Word docs. As my Windows version is a bit long in the tooth (5.5), the export is not fantastic. Of course, many concepts do not translate. I have also tried exporting to word perfect, which OpenOffice seems to import nicely. Success was not significantly different. I have not looked at the PDF import in OpenOffice for this. FrameMaker does make an excellent PDF doc, with indexes and links. Maybe that is a way to go. No matter which method I look at, all the paragraph and character formatting seems not to make it. Or, at best, it seems to be inconsistent. Perhaps if your Solaris FrameMaker is newer, it does a better job of exporting to Word files. What I would like to see is a MIF to ODF (e.g., OpenOffice) conversion tool. I have not found one. There must be many FrameMaker users that would like to get docs to other tools without unnecessary loss of formatting. Have you looked for any MIT to Word tools? A few years ago, Adobe released a Linux version of FrameMaker. It worked perfect. I was happy. It had a one year activation. Adobe decided not to release it as a product. Which was an odd decision. If you could run the conversion on a different platform (or maybe in wine), this looks interesting: http://www.omsys.com/dcl/mif2go_main.htm I have not tried it. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. This might be due to how FM handles font mapping. I remember having to have all the fonts used in the documents installed (along with a PS printer), for the FM files from my clients not to be corrupted (automatically remapped to using other fonts than their selected ones).

Yup, I tried it back then too. Silly Adobe! BR, Gudmund -- This message and any replies to it is scanned by http://www.fra.se. Please direct any complaints about this to them. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
