Well, I don't know, but let me think. Make sure your system is fully updated via YOU. Antivir used a registration key, I think that it is no longer necesary, although I keep mine. SuSE install came with one, perhaps that one is no longer necesary, or on the contrary, you need your own. Finally, you can get the engine directly from their site and get the newest.
Where did you get version 2.1.8-51?
Probably it has been automatically updated from them. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I had the same problem when I used the professional version without a license. You need to download and install the free private version. Sandy -- List replies only please! Please address PMs to: news-reply2 (@) japantest (.) homelinux (.) com
stupid question probably here... Those of us that have never used an anti-virus program on Linux and brag to their MS friends that they don't need to wonder why on Linux one is needed? Why have the extra overhead on the machine?

I want to satisfy my curiosity about the virii family name of the executables I get every day in spam - all virii, of course ;-) It is certainly faster and equally safe to simply reject executables with amavis-new. Well, may not: there are macros in things like doc files. Then, there are those holding samba shares for windows machines, they also may want to check those files. There is a kernel thing from antivir to check any new file as soon as it is created. Never used it, though, can't comment on it. Then, there is wine: you can execute windows' programs and get infected there. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Linux don't really need antivir only if your machine is serving as a mail server etc to winblob machines, according to symantec that only has recorded 3098 viruses for Linux but none for Linux it self only for applications running on Linux. On Fri, 2006-10-20 at 07:53 -0700, Robert Lewis wrote:

AV programs are often used on mail or file servers, for Windows users.

I actually have clam running on my laptop. It is just an added sense of security that I don't become an unwitting zombie. The funny thing was I inquired to AVG about their antivir proggie for Linux. The list price is currently $800. I asked if they had a personal version. They replied that they only supply versions to servers. I asked what the difference between a workstation and a server in Linux was. I haven't gotten an answer yet. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

Because if you ask, you are not a potential client ;-) For them, a server is a machine that serves things to other machines. A mail server, a file server... specially in a windows environment, needs an antivirus: not for itself, but for the protection of others. That's why they don't make a personal product, no need - I guess. Antivir, now from "Avira GmbH", takes another look. They have a personal use product (PersonalEdition Classic), but in fact it is used to scan mail coming in in server fashion to one person only. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I haven't gotten an answer yet. Interesting. I thought that AVG had a free cersion for Linux as they do for Windows? It seems though from your post that instead of AVG, we should either look elsewhere ie Thunderbyte or strengthen those firewalls.

Maybe mine worked straight away because I had my license (free register) activated, instead of the one from SuSE, and later, it updated itself. I have forgotten if I did, but I see I do have my license or registration key active: | AntiVir / Linux Version 2.1.8-52 | Copyright (c) 2006 by Avira GmbH. | All rights reserved. | | VDF version: 6.36.0.154 created 19 Oct 2006 | | For private, non-commercial use only. | AntiVir license: 149*** for PersonalEdition Classic - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
