I don't know how much effort it would be to setup and run this, but I really believe SuSE could benefit from using the following product: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bugzilla/ It is sometimes frustrating to see problems, but not be able to follow the progress of their resolution. AFAIK there is not 'standard' way to report a bug, much less follow up on one, or determine if the bug is already reported. I have found such systems invaluable as an SA running a large network. It may be hard to put in place and get people to use it, but once it is in place, it makes everything much smoother, and saner. Steven
Good form Steven. I agree as my problem with YaST1 posted to feedback@suse.de and this list was never addressed. At least then they would have a recognized system for bugs, and then if they have the employee base to code, it would be addressed. -----Original Message----- From: Steven T. It's there, http://bugzilla.suse.de, but for authorized users only. -Kastus

Yes, it's for developers and SuSE employees. As far as I know..when I was there they had no public bugzilla. I would email LenZ and the others who are on the list. They do read this list.. but they are very busy so who knows how often they do. * Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka (kastus@tsoft.com) [010918 15:29]: ->On Tue, Sep 18, 2001 at 02:12:25PM -0800, W.D.McKinney wrote: ->> What constitutes an "authorized user" on this server ? ->> -> ->I wish I knew. Not all what people write are really bugs that is why many (all?) commercial companies do not give a direct access to their BTS. But all of them (should) have a public place were people can complain about bugs they found. I do not think SuSE will give anybody access to bugzilla.suse.de . Perhaps they could open it up to people who have purchased more than 5 releases or something like that. My problem is that I have a lot of 'minor' problems which all add up to a major problem. I never know if someone is working the issue, ignoring the issue, or is completely unaware of the problem. Perhaps SuSE could have a public and a private bugzilla? Hello Yes, this is a very peculiar thing that Suse do not have a public bug tracker. In my experience sending messages to feedback@suse.com is just a waste of time. Of course there may be many false-positives sent in, but that is the way of the world. There are bugs in Suse distributions and they cannot all be hit by Suse's own testers before release. This is particularly important because Suse does a lot of customisation to it's releases, so general purpose Linux lists may not always help. Authorised users ? I bought the distro, that must be some kind of authorisation ! The problem is that it must be a controlled submission, in the sense that a report of "Bug in Suse 9.7, my Scoobee-Doo solid state storage device explodes when I run Yast77; love and kisses Billy" won't go very far. A proper online form, with mandatory fields etc is what is required. Within about 3 hours of first using 7.2 I hit several manifest bugs. They are all still there. -Wake up little Sus-ie :) Regards Cliff

Well if that one is for internal use (which sorta makes sense) they also need a public one. C'mon, that's one of the main points of open source: "Given enough eyes, all bugs are shallow" Please SuSE. It's time to start paying more attention to your users. You guys are starting to act like Apple - treating the people who like you the most (us) the worst. SuSE use bugzilla internally. However, the correct route for users/customers of SuSE to report problems is feedback@suse.de. Mails sent to this address will make their way into the SuSE bugzilla *if appropriate*

Here's a possible compromise: If a bug gets placed in bugzilla from a mail to feedback@suse.de, the sender's email could be added to bugzilla's cc list for that bug. That way, the user knows the status of the bug. -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com
