[opensuse] What is this nonsense?!
What is going on with latest updates to 12.3? Suddenly I am having a heck of a time logging into 12.3 because the grub menu suddenly decided not to recognise that I have 12.3 installed on /dev/sda5 and this all came about because I upgraded to the latest stable kernel and had to run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. When I did try to run grub2-mkconfig a few days ago I got an error message which I didn't pay attention to and since then I have had to use my 12.2 installation because 12.2 is not accessible. (It's only now that I have found the time to attend to this problem as other personal affairs have been taking up my time.) To cut a long story short I finally (using smoke and mirrors) WAS able to boot into 12.3 a few minutes ago and when I went to run grub2-mkconfig I got this error message: linux-67gf:~ # mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /mnt/btldr linux-67gf:~ # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg /usr/bin/grub2-editenv: error: cannot open `/boot/grub2/grubenv.new': No such file or directory. /usr/sbin/grub2-mkconfig: line 253: /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.new: No such file or directory What the heck is this all about? I looked in /boot/grub2 and there IS a file called grubenv but not grubenv.new. What is needed to get out of this pit, please? BTW, I login into 12.2 and do grub2-mkconfig etc and this process recognises my 12.3 installation on sda5 but when the grub menu is displayed 12.3 is MISSING. I need to get this grub2-mkconfig working because I need to pick-up the new installation of Windows 7 Pro (and NO it is not installed on the same drive - it's installed on a partition on /dev/sdb and booting into 12.2 I can access Win 7). So it's happening to you as well it seems. This can be expected on a Milestone but not on a released version especially since I have been running grub2-mkconfig dozens of times wihtout a problem in the past few months. Unfortunately, the config file that caused the problem was deleted after two edits, thus I can't report. I have tried to generate a similar line, from memory, but it fails to crash - either because the line is different, or because the patch I applied tonight solved the issue. It crashed at something limilar to this: # some text and a `token' with different ticks, on a commented line. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. No idea. This morning there was/were patch/patches to grub2 which fixed one prblem and I can now run grub2-mkconfig against the /boot directory but not against the common bootloader (in /media/btldr/boot/grub2/ ) where it comes up with the error message: /usr/sbin/grub2-mkconfig: line 253: /mnt/btldr/boot/grub2/grub.cfg.new: No such file or directory But at least 1/2 of the problem has been rectified.
