[S.u.S.E. Linux] installing 5.1 under DOS 6.22
I cannot seem to be able to install 5.1. I find the manual very poorly written. Can someone please help. My had drive is partitioned as follows C: 1219, D: 476, E: 191, F: 75. The only reason that I installed DOS was to have an operating sys. Since I am using a 486 with an old BIOS I am forced to use a disk manager program. I want the computer to be used only for Linux. If anyone can give me step by step directions it would be greatly appreciated. I tried to install all the packages and received a message that installation failed. The only reason I want to get this up and going now is to learn UNIX, Perl, and hook it up to my network. Sorry for the length of this post but I am getting very frustrated. Thank you rweis@sympatico.ca -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

While I do not have step-by-step directions, I do have a bit of commentary. While I believe it is currently possible to get linux to do this, I don't remember where I saw the information, and moreover I don't think you want to. It will severely impact performance, and subjigate(sp?) your stability to the operation of said program. I believe the diskmanager has to do with the INT13 BIOS calls not being able to extend to cover the entire disk. As linux does not make disk accesses via the BIOS, it should only be necessary for LILO and the kernel file to be available within the BIOS-accessable region. perhaps the following howto is relevant? <A HREF="http://www.li.org/Resources/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk"><A HREF="http://www.li.org/Resources/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk</A">http://www.li.org/Resources/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk</A</A>> As for what to do, i'd say use a floppy boot (dos or windows) to avoid the diskmanager and repartition. Eliminate diskmanager. Follow the HOWTO thenceforth. Peer review requested and welcomed, -josh

Mr. Rodmanius is correct, the Linux kernel won't use the bios calls and, therefore, won't be limited the same way DOS is. LILO, however, will have problems because the number of cylanders is greater than 1024. I'd suspect you are going to have to use a boot floppy. As for step by step instructions: 1) Insert S.u.S.E. install floppy and boot. 2a) Follow on screen directions :) 2b) Ok, a little more information... first you'll have to choose Adujstment of installation -> configure harddisk partitions and fill out that. Depending on the size of the drive that will determine what sort of partitions you want. 3) Then exit the YAST program and go back into it. (Because the partitions changed). 4) Then choose Adjustment of INstallation -> Set Target partitions/File system and set up the mounting points for the partition(s) you set up in step 2. Make sure you format (and if it's an older hard drive, check) the partition(s) 5) Then go to Choose/Install packages... It's a good idea to go into "change/create configuration" just to get an idea of the amount of disk space you've used. Maybe the default configuration trys to use more disk space than you have or than you've allocated to your system. ---------------------------------- <A HREF="http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html"><A HREF="http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html</A">http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html</A</A>> -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++>++++ P+++$ L++>++++ E? Greetings: For practice and recycling purposes I tried to install SUSE 5.1 on a 486DX50 puter i was given at no cost, (huh....ever try buy ram for these puppies..ouch!!) Any way, I ran into the same bios limitation as it max;s out at 154. I attached a 2.5 gig hd as slave. got it working easily (I cheated, istalled linux from my P133 and swithed drives) but could not get it to boot with out a boot disk on the 486. Not cool, and not worthy as recycling method...to mush disruption to the user. we live in a point a click world unfortunately. My project was to build a disc and method so that I would be able to give friends a loaded SUSE hd, regardless of machine spec's within reason, and just attach it as slave. I tried everything to get it to boot from the master disc then posted (read also the LILO howto). Answere I got back so far is this, but has not been tested due to lack of time. Others may wish to correct this scenario if you choose to read this post. theory: Set the bios to recognize the primary hd only. Put a 10mg partition on the primary at the front if possible and place lilo program files in this partition (this would be labelled as primary in dos but not active, dos 6.2 resides in the extended partition set as active) edit Lilo to point to the /boot partion in DOS. Install Lilo in the mbr as always with the option to toggle to Linux and DOS, now when you call for Linux, lillo will no point to its own program which will launched and recognize all drives as it is not dependant on the machine bios at this point in the boot sequence. the result should be a fuly functional dos disc and a fully functional Linx disc. Practice: this works? anyone try it. SuSE 5.1 on a 486DX50 at the command line is not appreciably slower than on my P133, xwindows is a pig with a 1991 ATI 8bit, 1mg Ultra vid card....be advised...a 30 CDN upgrade for a used vid card is a must, if you want to run Xwindows. On the otherhand this thing makes an axcellent firewall, print server, ipmasquarading box, etc for a 20 CDN used network card. Comment and advise? any would be appreciated. Chris Jose Aparicio wrote:

Hello, The Gecko said most of all. Maybe a few remarks. I run Linux on an "old" 486 too, with a 1GB Harddrive thats exeeds the 512MB limit as well. Linux harddrives do not realy need an _exact_ entry in the system bios. (I did not bother to enter the second disk of 120 MB) And I cheated about the first. The boot partition, however must be located below the 512MB limit (or was it track < 1024?). I have a 70 MB root partition, rest of the disk are diverse partitions, swap, /usr, etc. I entered just the disks geometry and the amount of track in the root partition into the bios, to make the machine look for a disk to attempt a boot from. as soon it finds linux, it will know things much better than the stuff designed for bill. ;-) Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
