Our school went Linux only recently but I had overlooked the British gcse course requirement which specifies familiarity with a desktop publishing package. Any other teachers out there who could help me with this one? The course is Edexcel gcse and we are running 18 off 8.1 boxes on our lan. Thanks, Steve.

Take a look in SourceForge or FreshMeat. Put 'publishing' in the search bar. Last time I did that, IIRR, it brought up quite a few candidates, but not knowing what DTP is exactly, I couldn't say if any of them were any good though. Have you checked whether you could use StarOffice? Given the level required for GCSE and the features available, it might be sufficient. -- JDL

Well, there is a separate word processing module so I guess they are looking at quark lookalikes. Microsoft Publisher has been mentioned. I think they are getting at frames and page layout and design more. I personally feel that dtp and wp are these days more or less the same thing. It's just that the UK examination boards seem to live in the past. Steve.
