[opensuse] Timescale for Maintenance Updates
Hi there. When setting up a new server in november last year I found opensuse 12.1 has some problems running as a xen server. I found a bug report that matched my problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727081 I switched to kvm for virtualisation on that system - no real problem so far. The bug was fixed at december 2nd including a private update repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/olh:/bug727081/openSUSE_12.1 For the server I set up in november everything would have been ok at this point. But as I have some production servers to support, that must be updated to 12.1 too, I have to wait for an 'official' update package - distributed via the official update repository. No problem - the bug has a fix, it needs some testing and then it can go main line. That I thought. 10 _weeks_ later the bug has been moved from a private repository to a maintenance repository: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=openSUSE%3AMaintenance%3A280 Does anybody know how long it usually takes for a patch from having a maintenance repository to actual distribution? Additional question: wouldn't it be a good idea to add some extra states to bugzilla for "bug is in internal testing", "bug got maintenance repository" (whatever that actually means), "bug is distributed". For an external user, who is not involved in the development process of opensuse it is kind of confusing up to frustrating to see a bug "closed fixed" and to not get an official update for it. For users who don't found the bug in bugzilla the bug is still open. As this bug is a showstopper, Xen simply does not work in 12.1 for them. That is a private repository under home. For such a fix to become official, the owner of that repo has to a) make a submit request to the update repo of a distribution (in this case openSUSE:12.1:Update:Test) and a) set the bugzilla entry relating to the bug to NEEDINFO maintenance@opensuse.org. After that it may need pinging maintenance to raise awareness.

Use openFATE to open a feature request for this.
opensuse it is kind of confusing up to frustrating to see a bug "closed fixed" and to not get an official update for it.
Closed fixed does not neccessarily mean fixed for that distribution! It may mean 'fixed for next release'. You have to read the bug comments to make shure. BTW, wouldn't it be easier for you to use the german ml at opensuse-de@opensuse.org for your questions? Can you see if the maintainer did this, as his repository now is located here: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=openSUSE%3AMaintenance%3A280 And what does the "locked" state in the "monitor" page mean?

Thats what I mean when I say confusing or at least frustrating. I know this attitude from other bugs that affected me, but to be honest I don't understand it. As far as I can see bugzilla.novell.com is part of the opensuse project. It is meant to be used by opensuse users to report bugs. When someone reported a bug and reads "fixed", the one tends to assume that this bug is fixed in the opensuse distribution context. Not in the context of the developer who fixed the problem, not in an upstream package context, not even in the context of a possibly upcoming release. From an external user point of view the bug is fixed when an update is available.
BTW, wouldn't it be easier for you to use the german ml at opensuse-de@opensuse.org for your questions?

"Locked" means that a release request is pending ... We usually wait for 7 days to have the 12.1-test update channel susbcribers chance to test the update. If this has passed, it will get released. We have again a 12.1 test update channel? That's good news, please tell the world about it. It wasn't there when 12.1 was released... Hmm. Actually it is still a bit broken due to the ongoing openSUSE:Maintenance development. Missing all x86_64 packages. :/ Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thats good to know - is there a Wiki-page describing that procedure? Such a page would be good for users to get a feeling about the procedures behind the scene. It would make all that a bit more transparent. As for the "locked" state - it is not described in the 'Legend' available on the 'Monitor' page. Adding the description above would be a good idea I think. Am 02.03.2012 um 04:03 schrieb Philipp Thomas:

I have no idea as I see it for the first time. Maybe time to open a bug for OBS to add a description of locked is in order?

bugzilla.novell.com is far more than that, it's the central bug reporting facility for all the business units that formed Novell.
