My guess is that it is a permissions problem.
Did you happen to use root at sometime to play audio
yes, I did. and maybe the permissions changed then and
no longer works for ordinary users.
Do you have access to another system that has
version 10 on it? If so I would capture all the permissions of the various files associated with the sound system and compare with the system not behaving as expected. Maybe it's just the /dev/snd directory. o For example on 10.1 mine looks like:
crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 11 Oct 10 14:13 controlC0 crw------- 1 rll audio 116, 3 Oct 10 14:13 hwC0D0 crw------- 1 rll audio 116, 13 Oct 10 21:13 hwC0D2 crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 4 Oct 10 14:13 midiC0D0 crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 14 Oct 10 21:13 midiC0D1 crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 15 Oct 10 21:13 midiC0D2 crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 10 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D0c crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 9 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D0p crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 8 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D1c crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 7 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D2c crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 6 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D2p crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 5 Oct 10 14:13 pcmC0D3p crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 12 Oct 10 21:13 seq crw-rw----+ 1 rll audio 116, 2 Oct 10 14:13 timer
However, from /dev you probably want to do something like ls -lRF | grep audio
this is my 10.0 machine pavilion:/dev/snd # ls -l total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 220 Oct 13 11:19 . drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 15620 Oct 13 11:19 .. crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 0 Oct 13 11:19 controlC0 crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 24 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D0c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 16 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D0p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 25 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D1c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 26 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D2c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 27 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D3c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 20 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D4p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 1 Oct 13 11:19 seq crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 33 Oct 13 11:19 timer . pavilion:/dev # ls -lRF | grep audio crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 12 Oct 13 11:19 adsp crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 4 Oct 13 11:19 audio crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 3 Oct 13 11:19 dsp crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 0 Oct 13 11:19 mixer crw-rw---- 1 root audio 10, 135 Oct 13 2006 rtc crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 0 Oct 13 11:19 controlC0 crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 24 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D0c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 16 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D0p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 25 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D1c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 26 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D2c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 27 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D3c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 20 Oct 13 11:19 pcmC0D4p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 1 Oct 13 11:19 seq crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 33 Oct 13 11:19 timer this is my wife's Suse 10.1 machine. cutie:/dev/snd # ls -l total 0 crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 5 Oct 13 2006 controlC0 crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 4 Oct 13 2006 pcmC0D0c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 3 Oct 13 2006 pcmC0D0p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 6 Oct 13 12:08 seq crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 2 Oct 13 2006 timer cutie:/dev # ls -lRF | grep audio crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 4 Oct 13 12:08 audio crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 3 Oct 13 12:08 dsp crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 14, 0 Oct 13 12:08 mixer crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 5 Oct 13 2006 controlC0 crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 4 Oct 13 2006 pcmC0D0c crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 3 Oct 13 2006 pcmC0D0p crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 6 Oct 13 12:08 seq crw-rw----+ 1 rada audio 116, 2 Oct 13 2006 timer There seem to be only minor differences. Not sure if they are relevant. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas? I think 10.2 is coming out in December, I would like to fix this before that if possible. I have thought of upgrading to 10.1 but would like to avoid that if at all possible. Gustav
