I've got an old 200mhz pc with 64 mb ram that I'm currently using as a server with SuSE 7.3. Will 8.1 run on this pc? I won't be using graphics, it is just to share the internet connection and a printer.
The short answer is probably yes. The long answer is why? I have a similar internet/printer box with SuSE 7.3 that I have no plans to upgrade the distro anytime soon. I find it easier to upgrade individual components (i.e., kernal, firewall, samba, etc). There's no compelling reason to upgrade the distro unless you planning to do something more than a share an internet connection and printer on that PC. Just my two bits... Thanks. I want to upgrade, because I've got some problems with 7.3. Samba only works when connecting with 9x. I've got problems with TCP/IP printing and irc_contrac doesn't work for me. I beleave this is also because I screwed around a lot with it and I want to do a full reinstall anyway. I'm also not very good at updating individual components. I had that same problem as well until I figured out that maintaining a stable internet/printer box requires installing the minimum default installation, configuring the necessary software (kernel, firewall and samba) and leaving it the hell alone! If you screw around too much with a linux box (especially if you only have a vague idea of what you are doing), it starts behaving like a windows machine. :) Christopher Reimer

It helps if you keep up with security updates, otherwise it'll *really* start behaving like a windows machine :) Doing that usually means you use a dist that's supported. With 7.3 that won't be a problem for some time yet, but eventually you will need to upgrade.

That probably won't happen until the 9.x version comes out next year. I think it takes SuSE two to three years to phase out the support for an older version. Christopher Reimer

I ran 8.0 and KDE on a 300Mz machine with 64Mb ram and no problems; so probably yes. JDL

Last night I installed 8.1 on a P133 with 32M RAM so yes, it will. Once, i've been using SuSE 8.0 on 166MHz laptop with 64MB ram -- and even KDE worked somewhat fine, i even could use Mozilla and OpenOffice. and even when i reduced my memory down to 32MB -- WindowMaker worked just great! I believe, that 8.1 is more optimized due to gcc3.2 compiler, and especially, if you dont need GUI -- just go ahead! On Thursday 10 October 2002 23:54, Z_God wrote:

If you do not use graphics, why not. But think twice if it is necessary. It's not that 8.1 uses so much more resources than a previous version. Not if you do not use graphics. OTOH keeping this box on 7.3, doing all YOU runs, and updating the printer software to the latest releases, will do fine also. Cheers .... I'm running SuSE 8.1 on a 266Mhz. Yeah, it's a little slow, but it runs fine. I'm using KDE and everything.
