[opensuse] Hanging window manager in opensuse-12.1?
Hello everybody, I wiped my old opensuse installation and installed opensuse-12.1 with KDE from scratch with the live-cd. Since then, I sometimes have a hanging window manager. I can move the mouse around, but mouse clicks are ignored. The taskbar and the menu are dead. I can switch windows with the ALT-TAB keys and switch virtual desktops with CTRL-Fx keys, but on the new desktop, only the area covered by the windows on that new desktop is redrawn. This situation lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. After that, everything works as usual again. Any ideas what might causing this problem or how to track it down when it happens again? I would switch to a console, <alt><f1-f6> and run top or htop to see what is using the display alternately, if the console is not available from keybord switching, ssh in from another machine and do the same testing, top or htop -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

To be brutally honest, I have had problems with installing using the LIVE CD. For best results I now rely only on the DVD. Takes me 10+ hours to download the DVD but it is worth it.

Question: since you did the installation (from the CD) have you updated the system to the very latest system files - either using YaST or zypper? You don't mention which version of 12.1 you installed - 32-bit or 64-bit; nor how much RAM you have; nor what speed the cpu is; nor if you have installed the "real" driver for the video or still only using the default video driver which is installed. Answers to the above would be of help in helping you with the problem(s). BC -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. I always do.

32bit

None of those things should have an effect of hanging for 5 to 10 minutes. As wrote, the applications _are_ responsive, and top don't shows a load of bout. Such long delays are most probably related to the network, I guess. Maybe there's a DNS lookup or something (the KDE menu shows the hostname, for example). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I had long delays that were caused by the video driver version (Nvidia). Once I went back to the previous version the problem went away. So, yes the video card and driver used is needed for us to give further help. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, IMO you should try to disable all that is making file indexing inside KDE. I had similar problems on Gnome raised by tracker. I don't know if in KDE it is Nepomuk... Check it and give it a try by disabling the indexer, may be you solve the problem.
