[opensuse] OpenSUSE 13.2 thinks its a laptop
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/e6bc4b5458f9686f6bb7cf02bdd6e1da.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
I have just install a fresh copy of 13.2 onto my desktop and it seems to think it is installed on a laptop. The icon on the application launcher is a laptop and not a desktop, also I have the battery monitor showing up in the task tray. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You may search for an installed package with laptop in its name and remove it. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Another reason I can think off is that you have a special device connected which udev associates with a laptop. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Only just saw your message :) yes I think this is what is happening
because of my UPS.
Is there a way to tell opensuse it is a desktop and still have the
battery monitor work with my ups?
Will anything else be affected other than icons and the battery monitor?

Do you have a wireless device that is baterry powered attached.. ? a keyboard/mouse/etc ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

only the same hardware as in opensuse 13.1 which did not have the issue.
logitech wireless mouse using the unifying receiver
APC BackUPS CS350 (This did not work with the built in power management on 13.1)
I am suspecting it is something to do with the UPSbecause this is what
the battery monitor is showing?? Still does not explain why I have
laptop style icons instead of desktop though

In theory, it could be either the wireless mouse battery indicator or the UPS battery monitor..however a safe bet is the mouse. that has some integration with the desktop. It is just that this particular feature didn't work in 13.1 :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

yes I have had no other issues between 13.1 or 13.2 (so far :]) now
I will re-install on a blank disk and use a different mouse to confirm
this, although it does sound more like the UPS to me seeing as it is
now working like a laptop battery. This ups never worked via USB on
13.1

OK I have re-installed on the same hardware without the mouse and it
still detects my system as a laptop
I re-installed again without the UPS and with the mouse and my system
was correctly detected as a regular PC
I have re-installed again with the UPS and the system is again
detected incorrectly as a laptop.
Is there any way of correcting this on my main install without having
to re-install the OS from scratch?

I have been claiming for years that YaST should have a setting to tell if the install is a laptop, desktop, or server. And possibly configure the choices in more details. But nobody seems to want to. So they do it automatically, and funk it. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Completely agree. Their should be an option to choose this manually in
the setup wizard and in YaST just like we do with time zone,
partitioning, setting up network connections etc etc
Does anyone have an idea how I can achieve this manually without
having to re-install and configure everything again?
