I'm not sure what you're expecting to see. I have Kmail configured as you describe above, and what I see is a full height pane on the left containing a tree view list of all my mail folders. To the right of this are two panes, one above the other. The upper one contains the message list, the lower one displays the content of the selected message. This latter pane is the 'message preview pane'. OTOH, if I double click on a message in the message list, it opens in a separate window.

Checking "Show message preview pane at the side" causes the Message listpane to expand and replace the Message pane completely, and a new pane to open at the right, in which the MESSAGE is displayed. The preview information still appears nowhere.

Again, what you describe is what I would expect to see.

In other words, there is no way that I can see a preview, and no way that I can view any HTML attachment, which I sometimes need to do. How to make a more rational layout?

I think there is a misunderstanding of the meaning of preview.
