Hi all, please forgive me if this topic has come up before, but has anyone been able to get an internal ATAPI ZIP drive to work with SuSE 9.2? It is not recognised by the automounting system for removable storage, and if I try to mount it using 'mount' command I get the message that '/dev/hdd4' does not exist'. Any help would be appreciated. Ted Mason

Iomega has some information from 2001 which they say is applicable to 2.4.0 or later kernels. I removed my ATAPI ZIP drive when I installed 9.0, so I can pretty much only point you to their site: http://www.iomega.com/software/linuxtools.html Do note where it says, for an ATAPI drive, you need to be using the ide-scsi driver. I don't recall having done anything special about this when I was using the drive, but you might wish to load the driver as soon as possible, eg. with a "hdd=ide-scsi" kernel parameter. Iomega also has some utilities that might be useful, though when I first installed my drive (SuSE 6.2), those weren't available, and it worked well with the installed system.

<duh> I *should* have also mentioned that I searched google for "atapi.zip linux" and came up with 8000 results, of which the Iomega reference was just one. </duh> I mentioned only Iomega, because they made the drives, so one may hope they have got it right :) -- but at least a couple of the others look like they may be helpful, even if the information might be rather old.

I saw a post some where where they explained how to put the hda4 back as it seems to go missing in 9.2. I have an internal 250 I am using with 9.2. All I did was create a mount point (/media/zip) and edit /etc/fstab by adding a line(something like /dev/hdb /media/zip auto rw,user, noauto, exec 0 0)I got this from http://portal.suse.com and did a search of that site. If yopu want to use fat zips you will need to use a name such as hdb4, but I found that for some reason 9.2 not 9.1 loses the dev hdb4 so I have formatted my discs in ext2 and no probs.

I think Iomega are missing an opportunity by not developing some decent Linuc tools. The number of times questions get asked about how to configure them sugests Linux uses are less quick to chuck away tech than the beans eating crowd. personally I find them much easier to use in general than cdrs that have becom throw aways and wastefull of resources. It's been a long time since I've used a ZIP drive but isn't that suppose to be "sda4" instead of "hdd4"? (That is, even if you connected it to IDE...) -- - E - on SUSE 9.1 | blackbox 0.65 | copperwalls was here ;) "Look! I am making all things new." - Revelation 21:5

Hi, First check in Yast Hardware info to find what designation your zip has. You might need to have a zip in the drive wheny ou do it. I had to reboort with a disk in for it to be detected. Better to know what it is on your system than waste time etc guessing. If its a fat partition or one pre partitioned by iomega then it will need to be the fourth partition hence the 4. I have found that 9.2 does not like them but is very happy for you to reformat to ext2 and then cooperates completely. Chris
