The #1 thing that irritates most US users about StarOffice and OpenOffice, is the insistence of the A4 paper as "standard!!!" I've looked "high and low" and can't find a way to make US Letter the DEFAULT paper size! Does anyone know of a way to do this, or are both packages just plain brain dead in this regard? Well that doesn't work -- it just sets the paper size for the one document. What we (US people) want is a way to make US Letter the default instead of A4.

On my system A4 staysm the default no matter what I try to do to change it. Can it be that European users have the *opposite* problem -- US Letter is the unchangeable default? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net old -> paulsen@texas.net

Actually most of us over in Europe have the reverse problem having to deal with US software that defaults to Letter. Payback time. :-P In OpenOffice's case (and I'm on 641 btw), it looks like the default should be set in File->Printer Settings... - but it doesn't appear to save changes, so you can change them directly in (path applies to my system) $HOME/OpenOffice641/share/psprint/psprint.conf -- Rachel

Getting the "correct" paper size to stick was a royal pain, but I have found 2 solutions. 1. go to your directory where Openoffice/Staroffice lives then go to ~/share/psprint using your favourite editor open the file psprint.conf. Scroll down and find the default paper size shown as PPD_PageSize=A4 and change that to PPD_PageSize=Letter or whatever. 2. If you want OO/SO to always start a text or spreadsheet file with your preferred font, paper size, margins, number formats, etc then you should also create a personalized default. a. Open a blank page and change to the formatting that you want as your default. b. Save in home/openoffice/user/template as an Openoffice template such as my_default_text.stw or my default_calc.stc c. Close Openoffice. d. Reopen Openoffice as text to change your text default or as a calc to change your calc default. e. Go to file -> templates -> organize and find your template, you may need to "update". f. Find your template, right click, and choose set as default. g. Close openoffice again. h. The next time you open openoffice it will use your template as the opening file. i. Do this for text, calc and/or presentation. Openoffice / Staroffice are interchangeable in the above. The above instructions look a bit complicated but the process is really not that difficult and really worth it. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Cat's curiosity, if you don't mind: what version of StarOffice are you talking about? I've been using SO-5.2 for about 1-1/2 years now, I've installed it (SuSE-7.1, 7.2 and now 7.3) and reinstalled it many times (the latest one, just last night), and I never encountered that problem! It always installs with paper as U.S. letter. BTW, I'm not in any form or manner associated with Sun and I'm not "defending" SO, only questioning purely on account of my surprise. gr (in /usually/ sunny, balmy Florida Gulf coast)

Likewise I have not had the paper size problem with StarOffice 5.2, however the StarOffice6 beta and the various OpenOffice releases have defaulted to A4 paper size. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? I have a 650MHz and 128Mb RAM, yet StarOffice 5.2 opens like a snail. I was wondering if OpenOffice is substantially better in this area (i.e. faster, takes less memory)? Both of them say 64Mb recommended, but I thought I read that OpenOffice does not have the Sun Desktop, if that is true, I was hoping it might be quite a bit faster. TIA -Jeric

How could anything be slower than StarOffice 5.2 :-) Neither OpenOffice nor StarOffice6 have the Star desktop. My experience is that both OpenOffice and StarOffice6 open faster than SO 5.2, maybe load in 1/2 the time. Still not very fast. In use, i.e. calculations or typing I do not see much difference in speed with ANY word processor or spreadsheet program. I want an office type program to load fast, look at gnumeric or abiword. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Hi, all: How slow is a snail? I don't have an answer to the question, only a bit of trivia for the record. Though I have a bit more RAM (196 MB), my AMD is an old 333 MHz K6 running on a "fast" 33 MHz bus. Spurred by the question, I just checked how long it takes for S.O.-5.2 to go up: 28 sec. Here's a worse metric: I can open Staroffice, then while it's loading, load up MS Word via Crossover Office. MS Office is up and editing a blank document while StarOffice is still displaying a splash screen. I'd like to point out that "heavy" programs such as SO5.2 open considerably faster when using a light-weight window manager such as Blackbox or XFCE instead of KDE2 (and having no other programs running). Even on my P166 with 64 MB RAM I find it quite acceptable. SH
