In SuSE 8.1, I switched from lilo to grub, and it works great, with one minor problem. I'd like to use my nice boot logo, created for lilo using mkbootimg in the gfxboot package. According to "info grub", grub should be able to exec the same file (they mention gfxboot::mkbootimg by name), and it works with /boot/message (the SuSE boot logo) which has near-identical strings at the beginning. But grub complains "(hd0,2)/boot/pcxlilo: file is too big!" A 640x480 PCX file isn't exactly compact. Rebuilding pcxlilo with the latest version of mkbootimg only made it bigger; didn't help. Does anyone have any experience making a graphical boot image for grub? I found on the net the splashimage command, but our version of grub (0.92) doesn't recognize it and doesn't have the string in stage2. James F. You might find some information here:: All of you who neither like the black & white Grub text screen nor the Red Hat splashimage may d/load some improved screens here: http://schragehome.de/splash/ The splash screens are designed to be compliant with Grub's line placement and not to render unreadable its messages. If you notice any problems, please let me know. To use the screens, best put the *xpm.gz file(s) to the /boot/grub folder and add a line like this near the top of your /boot/grub/menu.lst: splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/sxs_logo_***.xpm.gz ((hd0,1) = /dev/hda2 is the partition hosting my /boot directory, YMMV). Of course, these images are published under the Open Splash Licence which is not yet written. Klaus -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
