-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, The PDF format can use some predefined fonts that the reader programs know about; if different fonts are used, then the fonts definitions have to be sent along included in the PDF file, making it considerably larger. This can be seen looking in Acrobat Reader at "document properties", fonts tab. If a not internal font is used, it says "embedded" or "embedded subset". Sometimes, at creation time, instead of embedding a font, it gets substituted by another font. The same info can be get using the utility "pdffonts file.pdf". - From some help file somewhere, perhaps from the ghostscript package, I excerpted this paragraph: (note 11) The default, screen, and ebook settings never embed the 14 standard fonts (Courier, Helvetica, and Times families, Symbol, and ZapfDingbats). My question would be this: what linux fonts (or windows) are those fonts, the exact names? Courier I tried, Ok. Helvetica? No such font. Times? I tried the only "times" I see in OO, "Times New Roman", and it gets embbeded, no good. name type emb sub uni object ID - ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- --------- Courier-Bold Type 1 no no no 75 0 Courier Type 1 no no no 73 0 Courier-Oblique Type 1 no no no 74 0 Courier10PitchBT-Roman Type 1 yes no yes 72 0 FAAAAA+TimesNewRomanPSMT TrueType yes yes yes 61 0 KAAAAA+LucidaBright TrueType yes yes yes 51 0 LAAAAA+ArialMT TrueType yes yes yes 56 0 MAAAAA+BitstreamVeraSans-Roman TrueType yes yes yes 46 0 URWBookmanL-Ligh Type 1 yes no yes 66 0 The only font I tried that doesn't get embedded is "Courier", a fixed pitch font. Which fonts are there that do not embedded, shall I have to try them all? I hope somebody tried this before or knows about it... I'm using OO for the tests. However, if I type "times" in the font box of OO, although it doesn't show in the font list, it does indeed use a "times" font from somewhere! Seeing that, I force Helvetica as well, it works. However, acrobat says it is using "Adobe Sans MM" for Helvetica and "Adobe Serif MM" for Times. Those fonts seems not to exist, according to OO, but they get used... - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDLWIvtTMYHG2NR9URAs8YAJ9I4w+YqAV4cWl2jR+gPOVptNGjvACfbh4E eelEuS95/9X1XqGYUCkU6/g= =TFeo -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
