You might try a hearing aid, and perhaps tell us *exactly* what you mean by "default" software, snippets of log from dmesg, etc... Some clues, please. Thomas Adam __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now http://companion.yahoo.com/

If you're using ALSA, I strongly recommend using kamix instead of kmix. kmix is limited to the OSS API, so it doesn't know about ALSA devices. kamix knows about ALSA and will show you a lot more then kmix. Just try it and you'll probably be stunned the first time :) Philipp
Dear Philipp, I was unable to locale kamix on the 8.2 disks. Where can it be found? PeterB On Saturday 22 November 2003 05:13 pm, Philipp Thomas wrote:

Try using "aumix". I find that a much better program. Plus it can be run from the console, too. -- Thomas Adam __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now http://companion.yahoo.com/

AFAIK, aumix knows nothing about ALSA devices. If you want/need to use a text mode mixer for ALSA, use alsamixer (it's part of the distro). Philipp

Sorry, kamix is 9.0. For 8.2, you should try something like gamix. [Full quote deleted] <soapbox> Would you mind refraining from top posting and full quotes? See http://learn.to/edit_messages for why it's a bad idea. </soapbox> Philipp

Ditto, on the page he "pressed the *test* button" on... the volume start value is set really low , so as not to blow up anyone's speakers that might be attached ( and actualy plugged into) the box. Oh yeah , one other place to look, are you sure your speakers are plugged into the sound card output AND that said speakers are , in fact , turned on.

Any ideas? yeah, open your kmix or other mixer app, and make certain the volumes are set to something other than near zero , make certain you aren't muted on any item you are trying to hear.. the volume, cd, pcm, speaker, etc. If this is all okay, take a look at your individual apps, many of them have a volume setting as well...
