[opensuse] Submitting a bug report (was: KDE 4 no longer starts)
Hello people, If no one has any more information about this, I will try submitting a bug report. Any objections/thoughts/recommendations? Regards, Joop ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [opensuse] KDE 4 no longer starts Date: Thursday 10 April 2008 From: "Joop Beris" <j.beris@nederweert.nl> To: opensuse@opensuse.org Hi all, I have a problem starting KDE 4. This occurred shortly after the KDE 4 repos were moved. The error which occurs is: "Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation." If I run a KDE 4 application in a Konsole window, the error is a bit different: "# okular okular: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libQtDBus.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN14QObjectPrivate15checkWindowRoleEv" I have added the correct (IMHO) repos for KDE 4: download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_10.3/ download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_10.3/ The opensuseupdater tells me that there are no updates available at all. I have already tried to remove anything related to KDE 4 using Yast2, including anything that claims to have dependencies with KDE 4. Then I reinstalled KDE 4 from the above mentioned repos. This has not had the desired effect. I have already asked this question here: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=47969&hl=kde4, but there were no useful responses, unfortunately. Can someone help me, please? I would try zypper up -t package without limiting to KDE4 repository only. I had similar problem and the solution was to have Main OSS repository available as some package(s) was pulled from there, so 1-click install that is using only KDE4 repository didn't worked. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org ------------------------------------------------------------ Dit bericht is gescand op virussen en andere gevaarlijke inhoud door MailScanner en lijkt schoon te zijn. Hi Rajko, Thank you for your suggestion. I tried your suggestion just now, which pulled in some updates, but it did not solve the problem. The Main OSS repo is available, so that can not be the problem. The error remains the same. Anyone? I don't like replying to my own posts, but here is an update: This morning there were a whole bunch of updates to KDE 4, which I installed. It seems nothing. The error is libqt4 related. I had yesterday problems to update Factory installation because of missing libqt4. That's not true, the libqt4 packages you have installed are not the same as those that the kde 4 packages you have were built against. To explain: when you build a program that uses a shared library, the linker makes a note of where to look in the shared library for the functions used in it by the program. If you change the shared library, the functions may not be where the program expects, so it bails out on startup. Check that all your libqt4 packages come from the same place - do rpm -qi on them and check the Distribution: line at the bottom. This should be KDE:Qt44, since they are aggregated out of that project into STABLE:Desktop. For the rest of the kde4 packages, it should be KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop or Extra-Apps. Let us know if this is not the case. To file bug report you don't need anyone's permission :-) As no one here has idea what went wrong, that is next step. Though, somewhat different error mentioned in opensuse-kde mail list, would be cured by adding missing repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt44/ In your case it seems that there is missing some package, but you never mentioned that zypper or YaST complained about. I got almost the same error using YaST to install and leaving out package strigi. It happened right after 10.3 release, strigi wasn't pulled in as dependency. Can you restore ignored dependencies in YaST. It should be located in manus at the top of yast software management window. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know I don't need anyone's permission to file a bug report. :-) However, I also don't want to look like a complete @$$ when I do for failing to test something which would be obvious to the developers, so I was hoping maybe someone had some pointers that I might still try. Since that doesn't seem to be the case, I am going to file a bug report on this.
Though, somewhat different error mentioned in opensuse-kde mail list, would be cured by adding missing repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt44/
Thanks for that, but I have added that repository now and it does not fix my problem, unfortunately. I had good hopes that it might, since my error is QT related, it seems.

That's the problem...zypper/YaST does not complain about any missing packages. If it had, I think I would have been able to solve the problem somehow. Sadly, I have no leads as to what package is missing.
Can you restore ignored dependencies in YaST. It should be located in manus
I tried that as well...no such luck. :-( Thanks for your suggestions!
