[opensuse] How to install tar.bz
I guess somewhere in my dim past, I read how to convert .tar.bz to .rpm and then maybe Yast would install it. This is a follow-up to the email problem thread. Someone said there's a version 3 of Thunderbird, and there is: I d/l'd Thunderbird-3.0.4.tar.bz. (The system said I should d/l to ark, so I let it. Now somewhere on the computer, I know not where, there's a whole slew of files that were in the .tar.bz. [There's a thunderbird- 3.0.4.tar-1 in /doug/users]) (Yast could not find Thunderbird. 3.0.4.tar.bz, even tho I could find it on the net, with the help of the old t-bird. Yast can only find a 2.x version.) Now what? Please reply in words of one syllable, or similar. I really don't understand much jargon. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Converting tar.bz to rpm is not trivial and in your case not necessary. There is repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.1/ You can add the same repository trough YaST Software Repositories. Click Add then next screen check Community Repositories, then press Next, then on next screen check openSUSE Build Service - Mozilla, then press OK. Now you can go back to Software Management, find Thunderbird and update it. Current version is MozillaThunderbird-3.0.4. Advantage of adding above repository is that you will have updates when they are published. -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Rather than convert, visit http://software.opensuse.org/search - look for Thunderbird there (MozillaThunderbird is what you'll find it listed under) and install from the RPM there. Installing from a tarball (bz2 or gz) means that it won't be tracked in the RPM database; converting from a tarball to RPM means that dependencies won't be set up properly. Installing a pre-built RPM is your best option. Conversion is not done. The usual procedure is to read the instructions that come with whatever you want to install ;-) Typically, you expand the archive by using "tar" and some options on the command line, then you change to the newly created directory, and then run something in there. What? The instructions should say what. If it is a binary perhaps it is "install", if it is a source tree, then perhaps ./configure, make, make install. And as others have said, there is an rpm already prepared, so use it :-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
