[SuSE Linux] When will SusE make a Alpha distribution
Does any one know if and otherwise when SuSE will make an Alpha distribution. My colleque is running RedHat, but he has the same problems with RedHat that I had before I switched to SuSE. Glint that doesn't work, the user manager that isn't 1000ke etc... He wants SuSE also, but having an Alpha it is a whole lot of work to change all the make files and compile all tha packages. But anyway it is really really fast!!! - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

We should really put up a FAQ for these kind of questions :) I'd volunteer to do so, if you guys out there send me some contributions! I will put them together, maybe even write some answers. To answer your question, we will first move over to libc6 aka glibc. As soon as the i386 Distribution (6.0) will run stable, we will take the plunge an do the Alpha port. It is expected to be released _after_ S.u.S.E. Linux 6.0, so please be patient.

But I really pull my hat for their effort. I once installed a RH (4.2 IIRC) on a sparc, it worked like a charm. It is no easy task to have a consistent distribution for so many platforms.

Then you can imagine, what lies ahead for us :^)

Agreed. I'd love to have one, too... LenZ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer S.u.S.E. I'll try to help putting it to LaTeX, and then convert it to PostScript and PDF. Send me an e-mail if help is needed. Thanks for your offer. I was planning on writing it in SGML (Linuxdoc-SGML, to be specific), so it can be easyly converted to other formats. I will start putting together some of the questions and answers, that I consider to be worth to be in a FAQ. As soon as I have some questions together, I will post it to the list an await your feedback. LenZ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer S.u.S.E. what kind of contributions? A SuSE faq would be very kewl, and would also give quick information to pass on to people/friend I talk to who are interesting in trying linux, when I do my usual 'get SuSE, it's an awesome distribution' thingie. I was thinking of questions with answers that you consider to be a FAQ in this group. I'd appreciate to have it in raw ASCII, so I can easily paste it into the document :)

Hmm, I'm not sure, if it will be suitable to pass on as a leaflet :^) Let's see, where it will go. Yes, I understand now. Hopefully we'll have a S.u.S.E faq soon as some of the most commonly asked questions (egcs, glibc, alpha ports) may changes shawtly. 6.0 really isn't that far off if you intend to release it this year.

Greetings,
LenZ You're right, of course, letting someone borrow one of the books you put out or directing them to the website might be more appropriate,

If that is a problem, I would be happy to help Lenz or whoever is in charge of maintaining online documentation for S.u.S.E. keep the mailing list FAQ up to date. I devote most of my waking hours to unix and unix-like operating systems already, it's not a real stretch for me to devote some of my time to my favorite one :) -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A</A>> \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Actually, there is a question that might be o.k. I don't know the answer so I'll ask ( though it's been asked before).... Is S.u.S.E. planning to get a contributory archive? I know it's been discussed before, but I think it might have it's place in the S.u.S.E. faq... I'd be happy to contribute to keeping it up to date...if that's possible.
