[SLE] Can't connect with USB DSL modem
Hello, I'm really new to Linux and have just installed OpenSuse 10.1. Most of it seems to be working OK, but I can't get connected with my USB DSL modem. It's a Sagem eagle chipset based modem and I'm trying to connect to Tiscali broadband in the UK. I've installed the modem drivers and they seem to be working OK - the modem lights come on and the /var/log/messages entry seems OK (but i might not be interpreting it correctly). The KInternet log says this: SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.59 on linux-ts86. Status is: disconnected trying to connect to smpppd connect to smpppd Status is: disconnected Status is: lurking pppd[0]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded. pppd[0]: PPPoATM plugin_init pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded. pppd[0]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.38 pppd[0]: Renamed interface ppp0 to dsl0 pppd[0]: Using interface dsl0 Status is: lurking pppd[0]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500 pppd[0]: Couldn't set up demand-dialled PPP interface: Inappropriate ioctl for device Status is: lurking Status is: disconnected pppd[0] died: Fatal pppd error (exit code 1) Does this give anyone a clue to what might be wrong? Do you need any other information? -- -- With best regards, Derek Carr, Birmingham, UK http://alldruid.co.uk/

When you become old to Linux, you get yourself a router. I imagine you are dual booting and want to use windows as well. If this is the case, and you are using Linux, the support for ethernet cards is excellent, and it really is a no-brainer to get a router working with Linux.

I imagine this might be where it goes wrong. Go to www.adslguide.co.uk and ask there what the MTU should be. I think its 1478, but I am not sure. There is another popular value, 1430, [I think] sometimes recommended by tweakers.
pppd[0]: Couldn't set up demand-dialled PPP interface: Inappropriate ioctl for device Status is: lurking Status is: disconnected pppd[0] died: Fatal pppd error (exit code 1)
Does this give anyone a clue to what might be wrong? Do you need any other information?

No funds for that at the moment, but I don't see why the USB modem shouldn't work just as well.

Thanks for the thoughts there and the address. I did some experiments and tweaking in Windows and found my MTU rate should 1480, which makes sense. However, from this reading I don't see that Linux shouldn't be able to change the MTU to 1500. It might mean dropped packets, but not an inability to connect to the network. Next thing: how do I change the MTU in linux? I know the command is "ifconfig <interface> MTU 1480" but what is the <interface> I tried ppp0, dsl0, PPPoATM, pppoatm and a few others, and it didn't recognise any of them.
pppd[0]: Couldn't set up demand-dialled PPP interface: Inappropriate ioctl for device Status is: lurking Status is: disconnected pppd[0] died: Fatal pppd error (exit code 1)
Does this give anyone a clue to what might be wrong? Do you need any other information?

Derek, have you downloaded the data files (firmware) for your modem? You don't say what model you have but I have set up a friend's usb Sagem 800 modem for tiscali.co.uk and it works fine. This modem uses the kernel ueagle-atm module and needs the data containing the firmware to be installed. It is here: http://eagle-usb.org/ueagle-atm/non-free/ueagle-data-1.1.tar.gz Here's what I did: As root 1. Create a new directory called "/usr/lib/ueagle-atm" 2. Copy all of the contents of the data file into the new directory 3. Ensure adsl modem is connected to phone line 4. Unplug adsl modem from usb port 5. Plug adsl modem back into usb port 6. Wait for modem lights to stop flashing. 7. Configure the adsl modem using YaST-->Network_Devices-->DSL This is what I did: a) PPP Mode is PPP over ATM b) VPI/VCI is 0.38 for tiscali UK c) Device Activation is On Hotplug d) Add a new custom provider and fill in the details e) **Uncheck** "Always ask for password, and enter your password f) Check "External firewall" g) Set idle timeout to zero At this point if you are not already on line (ifconfig will show dsl0), you can issue the command: ifup dsl0 My friend's system connects all by itself without the need for the ifup dsl0, no need for kinternet. I hope this helps. Geoff

Hi Geoff, Thanks for the reply. I'd done most of what you suggested, except I'd put the firmware into a different directory. So I've copied over to the directory you suggest. I hadn't unplugged the USB port previously: it's rather tricky to get at on my machine. Anyway, i tried that, but I don't think it made a lot of difference - the modem lights are lit anyway. (They weren't until I copied the firmware files into the right directory.) I'd already configured the interface as you suggest and rebooted several times. ifup dsl0 says that the interface is up, but when I do 'ifconfig dsl0' it says that it can't find the interface. ifconfig -a just gives two interfaces l0 and sit0, ifconfig on its own, just l0. Trying to get to any web page with Konkeror or Firefox just gives a Host not found error, and ping just says there is no network. So where do i go from here? -- -- With best regards, Derek Carr, Birmingham, UK http://alldruid.co.uk/
