Running Windows Media Player with SuSE?
Hello, everyone. I'm using SuSE 9.3 and 10.0, and Firefox 1.0.7. Last year folks on the list helped me with a problem I was having viewing video clips on the MLS (US pro soccer) website. That problem was tied to an error message that said: "mms not supported protocol." Now the site has changed, and I am unable to view videos again. I tried searching the web for a solution to my problem but have not been able to effect a "fix." Hoping one of you gurus has the answer. Here's how to view the problem. Go to: www.mlsnet.com (that's MLS.NET) then on the left side click "sights and sounds," and then on the next screen immediately to the right of "sights and sounds" click on any of the video clips, for example: 04/15: Razov puts Chivas USA up: 350K For me a screen opens promoting a new pay-service to view videos, and offering a free trial period. There is a screen to the upper left where sample videos are supposed to play. But for me it is blank, and stays blank. I contacted MLS but was told the site would **only** work with WMP version 9 or higher, and that there were no plans to add capabilities for other players such as Real Player. :o( So, gurus, can anyone figure a way to get this to work with SuSE 9.3 and SuSE 10.0? And perhaps this may be a related problem? Go to: http://www.soccerfanatics.net/browse.php Click on any of the video clip links and I get a screen that tells me I need to download plugins. But when I try I am told there are none. And then I'm taken to the Microsoft website where I can download WMP if I have Windows! Any ideas? Thanks!! Gil

I just tried it with Konqueror. The window pops up that *should* play the video...but it doesn't. I then pasted the URL into Xine, but before entering it, I deleted all the 'java' crap out of the URL, so that it was just a plain mms URL...and then it played fine. It's just the crappy written java on the site it seems.

All works fine for me with Suse 10 with latest KDE n Konq. You'll need MPlayer installed to enable WMV support. Matthew

Works fine for me in Firefox 1.5.0.1 with mplayerplug-in
This *almost* works, displaying the proper embedded mplayerplug-in screen and buffering the clip, but buffering stops at 99%. This happens with both .wmv and .avi clips. I suspect this might have something to do with needing to "Log in" to download clips and post comments. I don't want to register at the site so I can log in and see if the problem goes away. regards, Carl

All the video content worked for me, I'm not a member.

I didn't register- it works fine have. Try playing one of the URL's from the commandline and see if there are any error messages. Charles -- printk(KERN_ERR "%s: Something Wicked happened! %4.4x.\n",...); linux-2.6.6/drivers/net/sundance.c

From .xsession-errors: Window manager warning: Window 0x4200019 (MPlayer) sets an MWM hint indicating it isn't resizable, but sets min size 1 x 1 and max size 2147483647 x 2147483647; this doesn't make much sense.

Don't look at .xsession-errors, plus I doubt that you are using MWM. Start mplayer in a console with one of the URL's, for example: mplayer mms://a1503.v115042.c11504.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1503/11504/v0001/mlbmls.download.akamai.com/11504/2006/open/topplays/04/041506_lagcdc_razov_goal_350.wmv and look at the console to see if there are any error messages. This means that none of the demuxers in mplayer were able to read the file, so mplayer decided to fallback to avisynth dll which does not exist in w32codec-all. It looks like the wmv9dmo codec is not loading. What is the output of ls /usr/lib/win32/*dmo* ? Charles -- printk("NONONONOO!!!!\n"); linux-2.6.6/drivers/atm/zatm.c

I'm running the latest available from Packman: MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-4 mplayerplug-in-3.21-0.pm.0 w32codec-all-20050412-0.pm.0 I broke down, signed up and downloaded some test clips from the problem site (.mpg, .wmv & .avi). Carl and all, I have made some progress. Now installed: mplayer 1.0pre7try3-4 i586 mplayerplug-in-3.21-0.pm.0 i586 kmplayer-0.9.2_0.99.1-1.guru.suse100 i686 w32codec-all-200504 12-0.pm i586 I removed gxine-plugin from Firefox. mplayerplug-in shows as installed in YaST. However, I don't see it in Firefox about:plugins. Nor do I see it in /home/gil/.mozilla/plugins or in /home/gil/.mozilla/firefox or in /home/gil/firefox/plugins. So if mplayerplug-in is there, it's hiding from me. I am unable to tell if it is doing anything. :o) Here's what I now see on the websites: On www.mlsnet.com Windows Media Player opens and I get the video! :o) However, there is no audio. :o( On www.soccerfanatics.net/browse.php Windows Media Player tries to open but none of the videos play. :o( And just for the heck of it, I looked on cnn.com, clicking on any of the news links that have a small video camera icon next to them. Windows Media Player appears on screen, and it looks as it it's trying to load data (the small clock that says "wait" is going round and round, but it never stops going round and round). The videos never play. (Well, I am assuming that if I wait 2 minutes or more that it should have loaded, and if it hasn't after about 2 minutes it's not going to...) So, some progress! I am still wondering whether mplayerplug-in is actually working or not. How can I tell? Thx Gil

Hi Gil, You've definitely made progress, now try this: Close Firefox, open Konqueror, click your 'home' button, turn on the 'show hidden files' option under the 'view' menu, navigate into your ~/.mozilla directory and drill down/around until you find the file called 'pluginreg.dat'. Delete that file so Firefox will re-register the installed plug-ins the next time you launch it. Launch Firefox and check 'about:plugins' in the address bar. regards, Carl

Arrrgggh! OK, I followed these instructions. And sure enough, the plug- ins reregistered. But now the videos don't play on those sites! :o( Can you say "frustrating"? Gil

Greg, I only recommended that course of action because, in his previous post, Gil had said the clips weren't playing correctly. :-/ Carl

The soccerfanatics.net videos start buffering in embedded mode (within the web page) and stop at 98% or 99%. However, once they stop buffering, if you click the 'Play' button (tiny right-arrow) in the player's controls along the bottom edge of the player screen, the videos play. :-) This is *atypical* behavior... generally speaking, when links like that start buffering, they continue on to play automatically. The 'problem' here is how they're wrapped in the page for serving, not the player configuration (at least at this end.) FWIW all my other 'test' sites are working correctly, too, including cnn.com and c-span. regards, Carl

This is really strange. At first I thought there might be something wrong with Packman's mplayer package (my local copy is from cvs dated Apr. 16, 2006), so I downloaded and tried it. You know what, it worked fine also. I am at a lost as to what is wrong with your system. Can you please try to play one of the URL's from the console and send me the full output. Hi Charles, You must have missed my previous post. It turns out there's nothing wrong with my system. It just never occurred to me :-) to click the 'Play' button when buffering stopped at 99%. In all fairness, I still think there's something amiss at the soccerfanatics.net server. That is the first and only site I've been to where the video clips don't play automatically once buffering has begun. Thanks a lot for your time and effort! Carl
Sorry, an addendum to my last message about progress... YaST did an online update and my version of Firefox is now 1.5.0.2. Please also note that just as an experiment I tried "fooling" the sites by changing the Firefox User Agent to indicate "Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP)." But that made no difference. Thanks Gil
