[opensuse] DVD problems
Two DVD's installed in a Fry's computer, unknown mobo. First one (sd0) set as master, second one set as slave. YaST hardware detect shows drives as CD-ROM CD-RW SOHR-5239V (/dev/sr0) DVD Writer 1040F (/dev/sr1) I am reasonably certain that the first drive is a DVD also. Is there any way to tell? I was unable to install SuSE 11.1 from sr0, but it installed OK from sr1. (It didn't recognize sr0, apparently.) Could not play commercial CD music from either drive. The speaker icon in the taskbar is set to about 3/4. Now disk is in /dev/sd0. I do not understand the "Configure Media Device box in Amarok, with its Pre-connect command and Post-disconnect. I thought audio disks did not have to be mounted or umounted. KMix says Alsa driver is used. Big hum from speakers, but no sound. All the controls on the mixer are at near maximum. It does not appear that the disk is even turning. Also, it says the artist is somebody called Mstthias Ettrich, which it is not. I can bring up a window that says "device doesn't have read permissions on this account Check the read permissions on this device." Where and how do I do that? (I am in user mode,) Thanx for any help. I've been around Linux for years, but I'm still snowed most of the time. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is there anything on the front of the drive? how about in CMOS? I suspsect if it's a CD-RW only, it's not a DVD drive.

Well sr0 may be a cd rom drive and suse comes on DVDs.

Without knowing if it's a regular CD with CD tracks or MP3 or whatever, I'll just throw out the idea of getting the non-free media codecs: http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats/11.2 Also, what's /dev/sd0? Did you mean /dev/sr0? Do you get sound from sr1? Is this a laptop or desktop? Maybe the audio plug came loose?
I do not understand the "Configure Media Device box in Amarok, with its Pre-connect command and Post-disconnect. I thought audio disks did not have to be mounted or umounted. well did you try mounting them? KDE as a device notifier widget that does a good job of taking care of loading media cd/dvd's. KMix says Alsa driver is used. Big hum from speakers, but no sound. All the controls on the mixer are at near maximum. Do you have normal system sounds?

Sounds like only root can use the drive. May want to put an automount line in /etc/fstab for the cdrom/dvd drives similiar to: /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvdrom udf,iso9660 users,noauto,ro 0 0 -- Michael S. Both versions of that command work here ;) Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.2, Kernel 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop, KDE 4.3.5 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9600GT -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you. wodim says it's just a CD r/w. I could have sworn that it was a DVD. First problem solved. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Of course you can't do it, it is a cdrom drive and not a dvd drive according to your info: CD-RW SOHR-5239V (/dev/sr0)

You mean sr0?
I do not understand the "Configure Media Device box in Amarok, with its Pre-connect command and Post-disconnect.
I don't use Amarok, but according to its FAQ at http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_play_audio-CDs, it currently does not support Audio CD playback: ,---- | How do I play audio-CDs | | Amarok 2 does not currently support audiocd playback. `---- (IIRC, Amarok 1 does). Try using kscd instead. Charles
