dhcpcd "infinite IP address lease time"
Hello, I have been trying to solve an error message that always occurs on system boot-up. The following is an excerpt from my boot.msg in /var/log/ <snip> <notice>/etc/init.d/rc5.d/S02dhclient start Starting service dhcp client on eth0<notice>startproc: execve (/sbin/dhcpcd) [ /sbin/dhcpcd -R -t 999999 -d eth0 ], [ PWD=/ BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz.2.4.16 HOSTNAME=scully CONSOLE=/dev/console vga=0x0317 PREVLEVEL=N AUTOBOOT=YES MACHTYPE=i386-suse-linux LINES=34 SHLVL=2 COLUMNS=104 BOOT_IMAGE=linux SHELL=/bin/tcsh HOSTTYPE=i386 OSTYPE=linux HOME=/ TERM=linux PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin RUNLEVEL=5 INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.78 _=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/sbin/dhcpcd ] dhcpcd[247]: broadcasting DHCP_REQUEST for 192.168.0.3 dhcpcd[247]: broadcastAddr option is missing in DHCP server response. After reading up on dhcpcd, I am not sure if I even need it, but if I remove the dhclient scripts in /etc/init.d/rcX.d my network connection is log. ps -daef | grep dhcpcd tells me that the process is not running. I have a small LAN behind a router connected to my cable modem using roadrunner. The IP assignment from RR is dynamic. I have set up a DNS server on my linux box (192.168.0.3) and set up the router to use that for DNS. The router is also configured as a DHCP server, by default. I also checked dhcpcd-eth0.info: # cat /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-eth0.info IPADDR=192.168.0.3 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 HOSTNAME=dhcppc2 DOMAIN=mn.rr.com DNS=192.168.0.3 DHCPSID=192.168.0.1 DHCPGIADDR=0.0.0.0 DHCPSIADDR=192.168.0.1 DHCPCHADDR=00:C2:F0:2B:1E:C4 DHCPSHADDR=00:A0:A5:E4:BB:6E DHCPSNAME=JTRUTWIN LEASETIME=4294967295 RENEWALTIME=2147483647 REBINDTIME=3758096377 Everything looks normal except the HOSTNAME, DOMAIN, and the 3 last lines. I am not sure where to go with this, thankfully my network seems to be working fine, but I am hoping to set up samba and possibly an e-mail server if I decide I have not had enough pain. I would like to have this working correctly before attempting those two tasks. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any other system info. Josh
Josh,
I am a little confused about your configuration.
Remember, dhclient and dhcpcd are separate DHCP clients. You
should only use one of them, not both on the same host.
Second, I vaguely remember reading in the DHCP documentation
that a DHCP server cannot also be a DHCP client. It can only
be one or the other.
Finally, if you really need an infinite lease, you should assign
an IP to the MAC address of your network adapter. Usually,
setting a lease time of 1-3 days if fine and the server will
continue to assign the same address to each MAC as long as it is
available.
Can you describe your network setup a little more?

FYI, this is not correct. I use the ISC DHCP client and server on the same machine (but obviously different NICs). I have 2 NICs, one runs DHCP server for the internal LAN, the other (eth1) runs dhclient for the cable modem. They both work great. I am still using 6.4, if it makes a difference (v2.0pl3-8 of the ISC programs) :-) -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 "We can stand affliction better than we can prosperity, for in prosperity we forget God." --Dwight Lyman Moody
The lease time is -1 in 32 bit integer. You might try setting
maxlease time in the dhcpcd configuration file to -1.
