I run Suse linux 8.1 on a Dell Latitude C840 with an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go (64MB) graphics card. I wish to use an external (analog) monitor as a display. In windows XP I can choose between the laptop LCD screen, the analog screen or both using the function keys on my keyboard. When Suse linux is booted I can see the log on both screens, but when the login window comes up the analog (external) monitor stops displaying and goes black. It appears like something is set right during the (I suppose) simple settings during boot that is unset when the more sophisticated settings for the Xserver are set. I have tried the following in /etc/X11/XF86Config : * adding Section "Monitor" and Section "Screen" from my stationary machine at home running Suse linux 7.x. * adding the lines suggested by Eva von Pepel (http://www.netsys.com/suse-linux-e/2001/12/msg01021.html)
comment/uncomment appropriate entry in XF86Config #Option "internDisp" Option "externDisp"
* changing the "ServerLayout" section None of this makes the least difference, the external monitor displays the same things as the laptop LCD during boot but when the login window comes up it goes blank. I would be very glad for suggestions! Jenny _______________________________ http://www.misu.su.se/~jenny _______________________________
Hi again, installing the latest version of the driver for my graphics card did the trick. http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191 Now things are displayed on both screens also after the xserver starts running.
