Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] S.u.S.E. 5.2
Actually I would disagree from experience, matrox's Mellinum 1 was an incredible card, the mistique and Milluinum II both failed pretty bad, Might I suggest a good ATI card thanks Chris At 02:41 PM 6/18/98 -0500, you wrote:
nvidia makes the riva128 board, and overall it is a nice card. Visual quality in 3d applications is somewhat poor compared to 3dfx and rendition. Matrox makes, hands down, the nicest 2d board money can buy. If you are concerned with 3d, then chances are you already have a 3dfx voodoo card, so for 2d I would recommend matrox. It would be worth waiting a month to get the new matrox g200, which hasn't hit the market yet but will be here soon. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

You might, but I wouldn't! Matrox is anything but a failure! It's supported well in Linux, and VERY quick. Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. Out of curiosity, has anyone compiled support for Voodoo 2? Is an X server for the card included in the 5.2 CD-ROM set? Are you satisfied with performance on games and the like? -- Glenn -- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
For voodoo support, simply download the linux glide .tgz from <A HREF="http://www.3dfx.com"><A HREF="http://www.3dfx.com</A">http://www.3dfx.com, and compile from the sources on the SuSE cd Mesa-2.6 (Mesa-3.0 is not yet suitable for quake/quake2). Read the relevant docs and you'll find the card is supported quite well in linux. The voodoo2 does not at this time have support from 3dfx, however there is an unsupported patch on the web at <A HREF="http://pama.it.dtu.dk/Voodoo2/"><A HREF="http://pama.it.dtu.dk/Voodoo2/</A">http://pama.it.dtu.dk/Voodoo2/. I get 1/2 fps better performance in linux GLquake, quite amazing for a game developed for another platform and a testament to our beloved os'es superiority. Make sure you add the line "export SST_GRXCLK=57" to your etc/profile if you're a bash user. That is the win95 default clockspeed for the card, but in linux the default is 50. It makes about 5 fps difference in performance. misc.word.corp wrote:

I'm just using the driver supplied by SuSE and video is MUCH, MUCH faster than NT on this same Tyan Pro BX box, with 333Mhz proc. I would suspect that the G200 will be supported in "short order." Now, if I can get my AWE-64 working tomorrow, life will be better.<g> Fred W.D.McKinney wrote:

And which ATI card would that be? I kinda like ATI, I am not a fan of the games or 3D, I just want a very good video board that is supported by linux and Win95 to go with a Viewsonic 17" monitor. I enjoyed all the comments so far. Christopher L Miller wrote:
