Well Greg, I want to help you. LetŽs go back. Excuse the repeated questions: YouŽre using ALSA drivers, right?
Yes, and I got 0.5.9 today.
You are using the standard Kernel (wich have sound module support, soundcore.o)
Yep.
When compiling ALSA, Which options did you use? You must do:
./configure --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes --with-cards=sbawe --with-isapnp=yes make install ./snddevices (this script creates the necesary files in /dev)
I did the above. But did a chgrp on the devices since I don't use the audio group.
You must add this at the end of modules.conf: ------ # ISA PnP support options isapnp isapnp_reserve_irq=9,10,11,12,13
Is the above necessary? My SB AWE32 uses IRQ 5.
# ALSA native device support alias char-major-116 snd options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 alias snd-card-0 snd-card-sbawe options snd-card-sbawe snd_port=n snd_mpu_port=n snd_awe_port=n snd_irq=n snd_dma8=n snd_dma8_size=n snd_dma16=n snd_dma16_size=n snd_mic_agc=n snd_csp=n snd_isapnp=n
# OSS/Free setup alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss ------
Where:
snd_port - port # for SB DSP 4.x chip (0x220,0x240,0x260) snd_mpu_port - port # for MPU-401 UART (0x300,0x330), -1 = disable snd_awe_port - port # for EMU8000 synthesizer (snd-sbawe module only) snd_irq - IRQ # for SB DSP 4.x chip (5,7,9,10) snd_dma8 - 8-bit DMA # for SB DSP 4.x chip (0,1,3) snd_dma8_size - max 8-bit DMA size in kB (4-64kB) snd_dma16 - 16-bit DMA # for SB DSP 4.x chip (5,6,7) snd_dma16_size - max 16-bit DMA size in kB (4-128kB) snd_mic_agc - Mic Auto-Gain-Control - 0 = disable, 1 = enable (default) snd_csp - ASP/CSP chip support - 0 = disable (default), 1 = enable snd_isapnp - ISA PnP detection - 0 = disable, 1 = enable (default)
I used 0x220, 0x330, 0x620, 5, 1, 64, 5, 128, 1, 0, 1 respectively, above.
And you must add comment symbols (#) before this lines of modules.conf:
alias char-major-14 off alias sound off alias midi off
Previously these were not commented out.
(in my system, lines 53,54 and 55 of modules.conf)
And now run:
modprobe sbawe
On the above I ended up doing modprobe snd-card-awe (modprobe awe didn't work).
sfxload /.../wathever.sf2
And I finally found an sf2 file on my computer, GU11-ROM.SF2, from the awesfx tarball. With the awesfx tarball there were the files in bank-samples but I don't know how to load them. What's the relation between the soundfonts in the /etc/midi directory and the sound banks in the bank-samples directory of the awesfx tarball?
And then unmute all mixer channels.
Did this.
I hope this help you. The awe family is the best supported on linux. So we gonna make your soundcard to work.
It works! Brahms works, noteedit works, kmid works, excellent! Luis is the SOUNDMAN! Thanks, Greg -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Excuse the error.

Take a look at your Soundcard CD ROM or at your Windows file system. Find files *.sf2. You must found a couple of GM soundfonts. You can copy them to your personal directory (i.e. /home/greg or /home/root). And load a *.sf2 doing sfxload /home/root/*.sf2. Kind regards.
