[opensuse] KDE4 dolphin pdf file preview
Hello: This is another KDE4 related question (openSUSE 13.2, KDE4 4.14.3). In KDE3 Konqueror shows nice, large thumbnail-like preview images with file information of certain file types when the mouse is hovered on the file name. Eg for a pdf file, see image: http://i59.tinypic.com/2qbcgsn.jpg I'd like to have the same previews in KDE dolphin, but it doesn't show them. In dolphin I activated previews for pdf files: Settings/Configure Dolphin/General/Previews PostScript, PDF and DVI Files option is checked on. If I turn on View/Preview in Dolphin, I get the following: http://i58.tinypic.com/25gcggg.jpg If I turned that mode off, I get the following: http://i61.tinypic.com/2ah73fb.jpg Neither is what I want. How can have the nice previews with file info in Dolphin, similar to Konqueror's preview? I don't see your examples. Sorry. I still use Konq as a file browser in KDE4, not Dolphin. I realize that Konq is really just another skin around the Dolphin libraries. So maybe I'm a dinosaur. I have preview turned on. It gives me a preview of the files that I have told it I want a preview of. Of course i have installed kdegraphics-thumbnailers kde-odf-thumbnail GimpResourcesThumbnailer There are others but I've chose not to install the ones for, for example, music. I have Konq set up so that it shows the previews ALL THE TIME, not just when mouse-over. Your graphic shows a preview plus 'file statistics' side by side. In KDE4/Konq these are shown separately, or at least that's the way I have them configured. There may be a setting for this, I don't see one, but I'd find pop ups like that as I move the cursor very annoying. When I want that information on a file, either I configure Konq so that its displayed along with name or I click and then select Action->Document information That gives me more than your example shows because I have it configured that way. Part of your problem is that ... You've bought a 4Runner and expect it to have **EXACTLY** the same cabin and controls all in the same position as you old Blazer. ${DEITY} knows what we'll do when you get your Diesel model and complain that it won't burn regular gas. -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What do you mean you don't see them? Don't the links work for you? Or you don't see what I want to present?

That's likely true. I have also tried KDE4 konqueror. Regarding previews it behaves the same as Dolphin.

I have the top first two as well, haven't checked the last one.

I guess I know what setup you have. Both Konqueror and Dolphin offers two types of views: preview off, and preview on. You can set up the size of the file type icon for both. For me even is I set the preview icon size large, it does not show the preview of the file, it only show that it's a pdf file (pdf file type icon). So it even doesn't work like that. Even if it showed the previes it would not be useful since the icon size has to be set too large. What I want is a normal detailed list view with normal size file type icons and if I hover over a file I want to see a large preview. That is want to see one preview at a time and not all the previews of all files. I don't know if it is clear what I mean.

It doesn't pop up im,emediately on hovering. You have to keep the pointer over the name for a few (2-4) seconds.
When I want that information on a file, either I configure Konq so that its displayed along with name or I click and then select Action->Document information That gives me more than your example shows because I have it configured that way.
The preview is a different type of information. In case of a pdf file it show the the firs page of the document in a readable size. If you have to find a specific file not knowing its exact name, you can identify the specific file much easier without having to open them one by one.
Part of your problem is that ... You've bought a 4Runner and expect it to have **EXACTLY** the same cabin and controls all in the same position as you old Blazer.
Mosty agree with one important exception: my new car is still branded as 4Runner but a newer edition. I don't want to turn this into a KDE3/KDE4 rant. I just miss very useful features existing in KDE3 but not in KDE4. I am still not sure if the mode I want is missing from KDE4 or I just could not find out how to make it active. Please don't cc me personally when you post to the list. I don't do that to you! On 01/24/2015 01:40 PM, Istvan Gabor wrote:

I don't see what you are trying to present. They both look the same and there's nothing beside the line item. You realize, I hope, that Konq can display in line item mode and in icon mode?

Sorry. I use 'Konq' rather than typing 'Konqueror'. If course it behaves the same, I said it was just a skin. The same libraries are used! Use 'ldd' to see.

Right! That means EITHER you don't have the appropriate thumbnail set installed. OR you haven't enabled pdf thumbnails Toe enable them, make sure you have settings -> services -> configure [x] preview this file settings -> general -> [x] Postscript, PDF and DVI files you might want to enable some others while your in "general" Oh, and install servicemenu-pdf while you're there :-)
So it even doesn't work like that. Even if it showed the previes it would not be useful since the icon size has to be set too large. Yes. And as I said, even if there was a 'hover' mode, which I don't see in Konq and I don't use Dolphin so simply don't know, I wouldn't use it. It would be to annoying having those pop out and disappear as I move the cursor! Annoying and distracting and dysfunctional.

Presumably that time delay is configurable? Still annoying. I want things done ONLY when I instruct it. oh, and I turn off tooltips. Just in case you wondered. Who knows? Maybe its tooltips you want?

I understand that. I use that technique. But I don't need a mouseover/popup to achieve that. I have ALL the PDF documents in the folder previewed so I can see the first page on each of them. IIR there's some sidebar option in Dolphin that gives the preview+details. As I say, I don't use Dolphin.

Sounds like a KDE3/KDE4 rant to me.
I am still not sure if the mode I want is missing from KDE4 or I just could not find out how to make it active.
There is a LOT in Konq/Dolphin that is optional or that you have to install a package to achieve. Some of it is internal tools and not zypper/RPM. I prefer this plugin approach to having the all-inclusive bloat that is inescapable because that was the way it was coded. I hate 'one size fits all' designs, be they clothes, cars or software. -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you have all those installed, (as well as any they want to drag in), then in Dolphin go to Settings / Configure Dolphin / general /preview-tab And make sure all those things you want previews for are checked. Then, when you have Preview on, it will show previews of all those things (and PDFs work). But its ALL files, not the one you are hovering over, which is overkill. Personally I don't run with preview on because its a tad slow generating up all those thumbnails. I use it selectively in certain directories such as when dealing with photos. I prefer turning on the information panel (/view Panels). Then I only get the preview of what I am hovering over, but it is to the side, not covering the Dolphin main window, (which would be a huge annoyance IMHO) and the size is selectable by adjusting width of the information panel. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
