[SLE] Unable to print certain PDFs
Running SuSE 10.1 with hplip-0.9.11, I cannot print the first page of my bank statement. This has been going on since 9.3 and earlier versions of hplip. I can print the statement starting from page 2 to end, but cannot print page 1 by itself or with the whole PDF file. Watching the status from HP Toolbox it indicates that the printer received the job and that it printed it. This is a networked printer on its own jetdirect interface. I have no problem with any other PDFs or print jobs. I also seem to remember being able to print from other distros. Any idea why it seems to be only SuSE and just this one source? Hi Scott, Two comments... First, it's really very important to determine the precise facts as they pertain to your ability/inability to print page one of these statements in another distribution. There's nothing more maddening than chasing after the cause for a clue that turns out to be nonexistent. Second, what applications have you tried opening and printing these statements from? Acrobat Reader? KPDF? OpenOffice.org? Do they all stumble in the same way? Is there a way to redirect or trap/spool the output at the printer to examine it for clues? Sorry if this is naive but I actually remember having to manually embed printer control codes in my documents. ;-) It'd be interesting to see what the data stream hitting the print engine looks like since the driver seems to be indicating the first page is printing. regards, Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

It doesn't make any difference which PDF viewer I use, I get the same results when I print page 1 alone or with the whole doc. Again I am able to print starting with 2nd page. Ghostview does complain that it can't convert to postscript when I include page 1. I do not experience any problems when I print from my wife's Winbloze2K system. -- Scott Castaline aka Bad2theBone Hey, I was born crazy, what's your excuse?!?! -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Hey, I was born crazy, what's your excuse?!?!
Just wanted to add that when I try to print to file the file will have a blank 1st page while all others are ok. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

So the problem is ghostscript not handling some part of the PDF file. Your solution is to see if ghostscript has been improved. -- Roger Oberholtzer -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I don't know about that driver, but here's what happened to me on an HP: some (very few) PDF documents would not print when the output was PostScript, in spite of the fact that the printer had PostScript capabilities. I think it was a 1200 or something in the low end. The same PDF documents printed fine if the driver would send PCL to the printer. The computer/OS was not the problem. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Can you view then in gv (ghostview)? I suspect not. If not, this means that the problem is not in the print system but rather in the the ghostscript parser that Linux uses to access PDF files. I have had your problem with PDF files that contain constructs not parsed by ghosrscript.
TIA

Get the same result in ghostview. Able to print from page 2 on but when I try page 1 itself or all pages, I'll get cannot convert to postscript. If I recall, I was able to use KPDF at work where I print to either an HP
