[opensuse] disabling parallel boot
Hello, To debug a boot problem, the parallel starting of tasks is annoying, because the logs are difficult to sort. Is there a way to unset this feature and start each task one after the other? thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

According to google, debian *could* by adding: CONCURRENCY=none to the boot line. http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Parallellized_boot_is_now_the_default... That was most probably for 'startpar', not for systemd. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.6°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In 13.2, there is the file /etc/sysconfig/boot and the option RUN_PARALLEL="yes" (or "no", I assume). Also configurable in Yast2 under /etc/sysconfig Editor (etc/sysconfig/boot/RUN_PARALLEL yes/no). Is this still there in Leap? Ralph -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

no boot file. Dunno if creating one will suffice Also configurable in Yast2

don't see anything relevant but may be some clues here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot_debugging jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In Leap42 (with or without KDE) I don't see that option in YaST. I do see it in openSUSE 13.1, but as of openSUSE 13.2, it seems to have disappeared. In 13.2, the setting appears to be present in /etc/sysconfig/boot. No (at least as long as you are using systemd). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That's what I thought too. And I've just tested it :-) Andrei, you don't happen to know of a suitable incantation for systemd? Not really. I believe this comes every now and then as feature request, but I am not sure how easy it is to implement assuming upstream is interested in it at all. The closest thing is systemd.confirm_spawn on kernel command line which causes systemd to ask confirmation when starting commands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

now I reinstalled Leap and the problem seems to have gone (after several days of studies, it seems so odd that I suspect some binary corruption during install or update), so I do not have the necessity, but in the mean time I noticed some "debug" options of the kernel that could give clues, but may be very verbose (not tested, I fed of tests right now :-) thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have it in 13.2 (as per my previous message) but I am LXDE, not KDE. I don't know if there's a difference in the installs. Ralph -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm using text-mode, it shouldn't matter at all. Well, as Andrei just said, using RUN_PARALLEL is ignored by systemd. I'm pretty certain it is a setting that stems back to "startpar" in SysV init. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.8°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
