[opensuse] KDE update on sunday
I did an update on a SUSE 10.1 of kde on Sunday to the latest in the build service. KDE no longer runs. To be more specific: I get X. I get KDM. I can use any window manager other than kde or gnome. I do not usually run gnome, but it has, to the best of my knowledge, been working. Not now. If I loǵ in to a failsafe session and type kdeinit, I see some kde apps start (in the process list) but kde does not finish starting. My .xsession-errors does not tell anything. Sooo, any clues how I can see how far the startup is getting so I can start to diagnose the problem. I am also running compiz (not yet Beryl) and Xgl with nvidia's drivers, if that matters in this update. They are as up-to-date as the build service is. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Some questions to find out what really happened: Did you upgrade anything else? Is 'the latest' the KDE 4 packages in the build service - they are for developers only? If you took KDE:KDE3 (the right choice) did you use YaST/smart to upgrade everything at once or did you download and install packages by hand? What's the output of "rpm -qa | egrep '^kde|qt3' |sort" Go to a text console and start a session with "startx -- :1 > /tmp/X.out", what's in /tmp/X.out? Sorry. It is the latest 3.5 in the build service. I have not even considered 4 at this time. I have been keeping the 3.5 releases up-to-date on a regular basis (checked weekly or so) and this has been working really great.
If you took KDE:KDE3 (the right choice) did you use YaST/smart to upgrade everything at once or did you download and install packages by hand?
I use smart.

The xterm error is because you made a mistake typing in the command. Read my instructions carefully then try again. startx starts whatever is in WINDOWMANAGER, failing that, the first thing in the output of "wmlist". Hi there, I don't particularly want to steal the topic, but I did raise a relating issue before to exclude xorg from being updated by the auto online_update. But doing so from yast2 you has not been effective! I do not think xorg was updated at that time. And Xorg / Xgl seem to be running. Has there been a new Xorg/Xgl in the last week? This is release 6. I have not made the switch to release 7. This is what I have installed: xorg-x11-fonts-cyrillic-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-libs-6.9.0-50.17 xorg-x11-Xnest-6.9.0-50.17 xorg-x11-Xvnc-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-fonts-75dpi-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-server-glx-6.9.0-50.17 xorg-x11-man-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-server-6.9.0-50.24 xorg-x11-6.9.0-50.17 xorg-x11-driver-video-6.9.0-46.20 xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-fonts-scalable-6.9.0-48 xorg-x11-devel-6.9.0-48 And the nvidia driver. A does seem to be starting as usual. When I log in with kdm, I get a new grey screen, and the mouse is a blue hour glass. After a second this ends and I get a new kdm login. All this only for KDE and GNOME. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Not a new user. But I did try with a new .kde directory. I moved the existing one out of the way. I took longer to fail, so I guess it was populating the new .kde directory it made. So perhaps this is an indicator of it getting at least that far. I also deleted EVERYTHING in /tmp. No difference. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Aha, so it was an update that started all of my problems as well, thats half the answer then, I posted about the very same thing "10.1 terminally ill" what a pity only one person read it and replied. More of a pity, apparently only one person recognized/had the problem and responded. Does 'obscure problem' come to mind rather than '10.1 terminally ill' being true? Or were you *just* referring to your particular installation problem?

Good that you have achieved a working model of the best distro available at an affordable price. And you didn't even have to report to m$ the regestration and ask for verification that your install was ?legal?. I think everyone is too busy slaughtering each other to have noticed although perhaps the subject line was poor and at the time I'd not done enough research to work out that my first reaction that it was 2 or 3 problems was in fact all the same and related to X I'm surprised I didn't get a "Google it you lazy so and so" I mean god forbid you'd ask for help here ;-)

I really don't want to get involved in the 'Great Debate' what I will say is if things carry on the way they have over the last couple of weeks all MS has to do is sit back and watch, then pick over the carcass of whats left. I'm no expert, I don't know the GPL inside out, I'm not fussed about codecs etc I do like Suse and have been a registered user since version 8 but what I've seen on this list over the last few weeks is appalling and people should be ashamed of themselves wheres the 'user solidarity'? The in-fighting is allowing outrageous approaches even if they are wrapped up sugary sweet platitudes and the only reason its happening is because everyone is too busy fighting each other to notice the 'flanking attack'. Crap I just got involved, ignore everything I just said. -- Regards Peter Cannon "There is every excuse for not knowing there is no excuse for not asking" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
