[opensuse] vlc dependencies in -x64
what's the latest concensus on installing vlc in a 64 bit system? if the packman repository is used, there is a bunch of unresolved dependncies, if the vlc repository is used, vlc would replace some libs that would break mplayer. I already have a bunch of stuff from packman, including ffmpeg and liboil3 and i don't want to start a dependencies war in my system. is compiling the answer? or do i have to forget vlc and forgo the tiny portion of videos that mplayer fails in? thanks, d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am running Mplayer and VLC. Both Mplayer and VLC have never experienced dependency problems on my Linux box w/openSUSE 11.0 and openSUSE 11.1 -64-bit. Mplayer and VLC were installed from the pacman and videlan repositories. Cheers! I've also run into this dependency issue, FWIW - it seems that on x86_64 trying to update libvlc2 requires the deinstallation of vlc-0.9.8a, vlc- qt-0.98a, an dvlc-noX-0.98a. My system tells me that libvlc2 = 0.9.8a cannot be provided. This happens when trying to update libvlc to 1.0.0-2009022402.1 - this with everything in the VideoLan repository. It seems that libvlc2 is the underlying culprit. Do you see the 1.0.0 release listed above in your repo? What version of openSUSE are you using? libvlc has to remain at the verison 0.9.8a as well. version 1.0.0 is used with the vlc-beta packages. The libs should be abi/api compatible, but due to the fact that v1.0 is in heavy development and can sometimes break, I decided to version bind the lib to the app. Do not upgarde libvlc2 and there won't be a problem. Yeah, that's what I've been doing, but in general it still seems to create a dependency resolution issue. I do have the beta installed (not sure why, honestly, I tend not to use VLC), so I'll pull that off and see what that does for me. I think zypper in 11.0 was a bit more aggressive in trying to find updates. In 11.1 this got better and the solver offers you what is able to update (so zypper up won't suggest libvlc2-1.0.0). In yast2 gui for software management you would still see libvlc2-1.0.0, but would not have to update it (except if going to vlc-beta). Except splitting and duplicating the entire repo, there is unfortunately no easy way to solve this I'm afraid. OK, thanks. 11.1 upgrades are in my plans, so I'll just wait until those are done to address this. Can you please provide more information of dependency issues you get? The two repos should be able to co-exist and there was a lot of work ongoing to have this made possible. If both repos adhere strictly to the SHLib policy, there should hardly ever be a conflict that can't be resolved.
