Further to my earlier post (see below) the error has now changed to "sorry, can't open modem" from Kppp after commenting out "lock" in / etc/ppp/options. User root can still dial out but all other users get the above error Sorry to pester the list with this little annoyance - as before, any help greatly appreciated -- Cheers Kenny Shields.
I recently updated some KDE programmes via rpms and now none of my users can dial out kppp gives an error of "sorry can't create lock file".
User root *can* dial out, so I think I've screwed up permissions somewhere.
Can anyone put me right? System is Suse 6.1
Any help greatly appreciated.

Have a look at /usr/doc/howto/en/PPP-HOWTO.gz (less PPP-HOWTO.gz) About line 4441 describs the various options and scripts. I suspect that you need to use /etc/ppp/options.ttyXX files... lines 4376 onwards. Regards, Bruce

Hi to all ! Does any body know how to setup the Network Time Protocol (NTP) over SuSE 6.4 ? I can't use the NetDate RPM because It produce a conflict with another SuSE instaled RPM. Thanks Eduardo. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Kenny quiered with thus,
Further to my earlier post (see below) the error has now changed to "sorry, can't open modem" from Kppp after commenting out "lock" in / etc/ppp/options. User root can still dial out but all other users get the above error
kppp needs to have lock configured. The other problem is easily fixed by giving each user permissions in relative groups ie dialout etc through YaST, system administrator, group administrator, F3 choose group, tab to users insert relative names followed with comma and no space enter next name, Then making sure that kppp or whatever program you use is configured with group as dialout, this part may not need to be done, test system first, maybe. SuSE database wvdial has an explanation of how to do this. ciao -- Rob Davies rjdart@optusnet.com.au ICQ 10432219 "To converse is one strategy that separates us from the Apes." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

There is a button in kpp setup to specify that kppp will manage the lock file. Using that method is the only way I could get it to work right.

One more thing the /etc/ppp/options file should exsist but basically should be empty.
