Hi all, Trying to install the new nvidia drivers. First I tried the tarballs, then the latest rpm's from nvidia. The error message I get is the following : /lib/modules/2.4.2-64GB-SMP/kernel/video/NVdriver : kernel-module version mismatch. /lib/modules/2.4.2-64GB-SMP/kernel/video/NVdriver was compiled for kernel version 2.4.0 while this is version 2.4.2.-64GB-SMP. So can someone explain me how he managed to get those drivers working with 2.4.2 Any trick or something I can do to hide the kernel headers ? TIA, Filip.
Hello, Filip. You are the third person I know of to ask theis question in the last couple of weeks. Essentially, we need to know how to get the sourses and includes on our system for the SMP kernel that is installed, since we only seem to have the files for the default, non-SMP, SuSE kernel. I think it's about time someone from SuSE stepped up to answer this, since no-one else on the list seems to know. There must be someone on the SuSE staff who can answer this. Hi, True, and I had an answer from SuSE who are really nice guys (The problem is still to find the correct sources etc.....) : this is what they answered : You'll have to recompile the DRM modules. Don't use the DRM modules which come with the kernel sources, they don't match with the xf86 4.0.2 release. Before recompiling DRM, your kernel sources must be compiled and configured correctly. So we have to recompile 2.4.2 ( sources ? and how ?? ), then recompile DRM, and recompile NVidia drivers which in my opinion will then result with the same error "kernel-module version mismatch" message. The solution might be to revert to 2.4.0, recompile DRM, compile NVidia and then upgrade to 2.4.2. What do you think??? Cheers, Filip. Le Samedi 17 Mars 2001 23:19, Stuart Powell a écrit :

Hello, Filip.
From the sounds of it, we would have to compile our kernel for SMP from the kernel sources that are installed, thereby creating a new source tree. This would then give us what we need to compile the Nvidia driver. However, by compiling and using our own kernel, we lose the 90day support that we paid for when buying the product. Is it so difficult to have the installation automatically put the correct source tree for the kernel on the machine ?
Bye for now, Stuart. P.S. I know the SuSE guys are great, but I am starting to get somewhat testy over this issue since it has been raised now by more people than just myself, and no-one seems to have a good answer. Compiling a driver for one of the stock SuSE kernels should not be this difficult. -----Original Message----- From: filip [mailto:vhf@skynet.be] Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2001 5:06 PM To: Stuart Powell; SuSE Mail List Cc: grimmer@suse.de; brosenb@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] New Nvidia drivers + 2.4.2 Hi, True, and I had an answer from SuSE who are really nice guys (The problem is still to find the correct sources etc.....) : this is what they answered : You'll have to recompile the DRM modules. Hello, Tor. Thanks for the suggestion, but this does not work. I have already followed through these instructions per the Nvidia documentation. The source RPM installs fine, then the module compiles just great. But when you try to load it, it complains that it was compiled for 2.2.16, when the running kernel is 2.2.16-SMP. It will not load. The Nvidia driver is very sensitive to the kernel version. My question, again, is why the installation routine installs kernel sources that are not for the kernel it installs. These are SuSE's precompiled kernels. Why would the installation not know to install the correct kernel files ? Hi, Well, after trying everything out without results ( rpm --rebuild, insmod -f NVdriver, define extraversion etc... ) I finally decided to go for recompiling 2.4.2 Had a very nice recompile, no errors. Then as SuSE suggested, I compiled the DRM modules. Smooth. Went for the NVidia tarballs, ./configure make install etc... no problems. Only problem was the sound emu10k1. That was resolved as Dids and Matthew said, --> alsa-project, download 05.10b driver, lib and utils and install them etc... Still have the black screen when stopping PC or ctrl alt F1,F2... System is 2xPIII 800, 512Mb, Nvidia geforce 2 Ultra 64mb, sblive and running SuSE 7.1 kernel 2.4.2, KDE 2.1. The system rocks !!! Opened in each of the 8 windows +/- 4 applications + DVD play.
