Hi, I'm trying to setup VNC so I can remotely administer a "appliance-box" (= no screen, no keyboard, no mouse). I have it running partly, but I can't setup the last piece. If I'm logged in at the appliance (screen, keyboard & mouse still connected) I can connect, and everything works fine. When I'm not logged in, and I try to connect all I get is a blank X-screen, nothing to log in. What do I have to setup to get a login screen ? Any pointers ? I'm running SuSE 9. TIA. B.T.W. Is there a searcheable archive of this list ? AFAIK the archives at SuSE are not searcheable, or do I miss something ? -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

What is it that you wanne do???? How did you configure VNC on the machine????? Which version of VNC do you use???? (RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, XF4VNC ....) This information we may be able to help you...... Stefan....
Hi Stefan/Koenraad, I posted before on this list with exactly the same problem: tightvnc is installed, added vnc file to /etc/xinetd.d/ with the entry vnc10. I enabled this, and now when i try to logon remotely via vnc kdm login should magically appear, allowing me to logon to a new desktop session (as opposed to sharing a previous one). Kdm does not appear, and only the black and white checkered x screen appears (with mouse moving etc). I still have not fixed the problem, and would also appreciate your help. This is repeatable, cos it has happened on a desktop and a server of mine with suse 9.0. Does anybody have vnc10 entry working? Thanks, Olly On Monday 19 January 2004 17:51, S. Bulterman wrote:

Seems I overlooked some replies. I did the same as Olly, and experience the same problem. Like I said when I'm logged in at the Linux-box (the appliance), I can connect to it with ThightVNC on a Win-machine (no need to approve the connection), and do the things I want (=administration of the box). If I log out of the Linux-box the remote connection terminates. If I try to connect to the appliance, without being logged in at it, I just get the X-screen. It must be running, but something is not fully configured. But I'm going to look into the document Togan provided (although it's for 8.1). -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

I tried the first part (X11-stuff). It didn't work. I'm going to try the rest of it this weekend. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

... For those of you that still are having troubles with this, R.S. Patil ( X-Message-Number-for-archive: 178381) gave me a solution that works. Steps 3 to 5 did the trick for me. I did try some things before (I did not take notes :-( ), so maybe the rest is still needed. The first steps are not needed, I just enabled the standard vnc items in xinet.d (not
