[SuSE Linux] SUSE Linux RAM footprint

Greetings to all, Yesterday I start the KDE control panel and check memory trough it. I didn't like the answer ... 64 Mb of RAM detected ( which is correct) 1.5 Mb of FREE ram. Does Linux with KDE require that much ??? or did I mess up the config of my kernel ??? Thanks in advance for any input you can provide Regards to all. No - everything is fine. Linux uses "unused" memory as a disk cache. Why should it leave the memory unused? You can use "xosview" to have a look about your memory usage. VERY nice design, of course. If one really wants to see misuse of RAM, take a real close look at what NT does with 64MB. I've been using the SuSE 5.2 version that came with PC Plus. I still, however, have problems trying to run TkDesk, in that it gets to the point 'loading configuration', them sits there for a while, and during this time the cursor locks up. Eventually TkDesk appears, and mostly works. Occasionally, a certain operation with it will repeat the above lock-up. I have a feeling that it is to do with IRQ conflicts (possibly with sound?). However, I have printed out all the system details (IRQs, memory allocation etc.), and tried to match up with the SuSE config. Can someone suggest the best debug procedure? -- Chris Keenan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Hi Chris; What type of computer are you running? I've got a 486/33 and have the same problem. I've always thought that it was just because TkDesk was hogging the CPU. To cure the problem I canned TkDesk and use MC at the command line. It does everything I need TkDesk for and it a world faster. its definitely the sound card. I had this problem until I got my sound card working. Then it has a nice little startup sound ;-). You might look to see if you can turn off sound in the settings somewhere (tkdesk) and see if the problem persists. Great! This means Linux doesn't waste memory, but does use it.
Does Linux with KDE require that much ??? or did I mess up the config of my kernel ???
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide
Regards to all.

Everything is fine. Plato:/root # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 515628 507844 7784 177600 19556 229284 -/+ buffers/cache: 259004 256624 As you can see, Linux uses the memory for buffers and caching of data. Think of it as an "smartdrive" in some well known game starter. But much more sophisticated, because it is self-tuning. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
