Thanks,

HI Fred, I would personally recommend CUPS and the gimp-print drivers. They yield excellent color results on my 870, and the C80 is supported. The gimp-print team is also quite responsive to questions and bug reports. Besides that, gimp-print has a great user's guide (but I'm not biased since I wrote it). :-) You can find more information about the gimp-print software from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/ If you try this, definitely get the latest software. Don't be deceived by the name gimp-print. The name is historical in nature, as the project was originally a print plugin for the GIMP. Now, it serves that function as well as supplying printer drivers for CUPS, Ghostscript, and Foomatic. I haven't had any issues accept KUPS works 1/2 assed in KDE 3.0.1 for me. I used the web UI to configure it and it rocks. I've never printed better from SO 6.0 and Mutt which are what I print from 99% of the time. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--

Hey Frank, CUPS and Gimp-Print work quite well. They are a pain in the arse to get installed and configured, but the output is quite good. There is a recent thread on the list about this issue, as well as an issue with Konq printing outside of the set format (i.e. with an A4 format, when trying to print a web page, the last line or two are either cut off or over so that they are unreadable). That is apparently a KDE/Konq issue and not a CUPS issue. Cheers, Brian

The Epson printers work with both USB and parallel port, but USB is better because you get faster data transfer and because it's easier to get the escputil functions that come with gimp-print to work with USB. Slightly off topic, but is there any maximum length for the cables. I use a 25 ft. parallel cable because my printer is on the other side of a doorway from my desk. On 13 Jun 2002 at 19:11, John Lamb wrote:

There is a maximum length for USB cables. As I recall, it's five metres. You can get a bit more than this using a USB hub. For example, I have a three metre cable to my hub and another three metre cable from the hub to the printer. The hub is bus powered. JDL
Thanks John, I think 5 meters should cover me. I'm planning on converting from LPROLD to CUPS this weekend on my SuSE 7.3 system. On 13 Jun 2002 at 20:17, John Lamb wrote:
