I got pretty much fed up with the little jingle that realplayer8 always threw at me upon startup... And it doesn't come with an option to switch it off... O.K. that's two annoyances. So what does one do? First thing is to locate the file, and change the name, to see how Realplayer reacts. I'll tell you straight away, although this *does* make the player start silent, it produces another annoyance: The "Cannot-locate-the-requested-file" error box. (Another thing... I *didn't* request that file to be played... In fact if given the choice I'd request to NOT have it play) There's no such thing as a realplayerrc or realplayer.conf, where you might change this. So the next option is to edit the actual file, to make it contain no audio. The file is located in: ~/RealPlayer8/audiosig.rm Right. It's a realmedia file, and I don't have a sound editor that will handle this format installed. Looking around a bit, I don't see any obvious candidates. I think it over: .rm is probably not editable by anything other than RealMedia editors, and I'm not going to *buy* some editor to do this one thing. But wait! I do have *one* editor that will not care, formats or no formats: The Binary Editor ;) So here's the trick: Make a backup if you like. I did just in case this wouldn't work. Open audiosig.rm with the binary editor. At the start of the file there's some infostuff. A bit further down (272 bytes or so) you'll see "%DATA". Delete everything following that. (The quick way would be to just select from the start, down to and including %DATA, copy/paste to a new file, then rename to audiosig.rm) Save the file. Done. Nothing broke, and I now enjoy the sound of SILENCE when I start RealPlayer ;D Just thought I'd share this, in case any of you guys are as annoyed as I was, but didn't get around to finding a workaround... Neat! I'd have never gone so deep into it, but that's very cool. I actually kind of like the jingle; it gives me a chance to adjust my speakers. ;) -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed!
