Well guys and gals, yes there are some very bright ladies on this list... Installed 9.0 on my laptop, my test machine, and can't get vmware to run. I followed the suggestion found at http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Oct/3516.html and was not successful getting it to run. vmware will always seg-fault when starting the virtual machine. I installed km_vmware and always get an error about, this is from memory, expecting (something) 50 but got 10. The results are the same if I use 3.2.1 or 4.0.5. Follow the directions to a T will out luck. Even tried to start a fresh VM without luck. Back to the drawing board I guess. Any one else been able to get VMware to run? Ken Schneider

Are you letting vmware-config.pl overwrite the vmware modules installed with km_vmware? I've not allowed this. I choose "no" when it asks. So far, the only problem I've had is that vmnet8 hangs on shutdown. However, this was on 4.0.2. I upgraded to 4.0.5, and that problem went away. The whole business seems slower than it did on 8.2, but maybe that's just me. I suppose the good news is that future kernel updates won't require you to go through vmware-config.pl any longer. (The SuSE kernel folks will have already done that for us, in essence.) So, there's that going for us. Regards, dk

I am using version 3.2.1 build-2242 I have the modules from the km_vmware modules loaded. I can run /etc/init.d/vmware start but when I try to start vmware I get the following error: Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 30.0, but got 10.0. You have an incorrect version of the 'vmmon' kernel module. Try reinstalling WMware Workstation. ---------------- If I run vmware-config.pl and over-write the modules vmware will start and load my VM but as soon as I hit the power on button it locks up. I've been using VMware for over 4 years and this is the first time I have this kind of problem. Ken Schmeider

Sounds like it's time to upgrade...

Well maybe, but as I mentioned in my original post I tried both the 3.2.1 and the 4.0.5 versions without luck. Back to the drawing board I guess. Just for my sanity you are using SuSE 9.0 are you not? If so can you briefly describe the steps you used to get VMware to work. One other thing I might mention here is that I did not have VMware running before on this laptop with 8.2 but did have it running with 8.0. Ken

Something strange here... I am a big user of vmware and I just did a fresh install of 9.0 on a P4 machine. It's kind of my 'lab rat' so I don't really care if it blows up. I did 2 things: 1) Installed vmware 4.0.5 (the latest from VMware) on it. Went through the module compiles but didn't let it overwrite the modules from 9.0 Booted win98SE and it works fine. 2) Did the same as (1) but let it overwrite with the compiled modules, and booted it. It still works fine. Hard to understand why it just doesn't work for you.

I was finally able to actually solve two problems. Solving my sound problem actually solved my VMware problem. I added pci=noacpi in the bootup config and I was able to have acpi running which solved the error I was getting when starting my VMware client. I guess it was also causing a conflic with acpi and pci as I was not able to have sound configured with acpi running before. Thanks to all for you help. Never mind. According to apt-get, it is already installed. Following David Krider's instruction, vmware is up and running. Ed Harrison SuSE 9.0, Kernel 2.4.21, KDE 3.1.4 PolarBar Mailer 1.25a

Try specifying the apic parm on your boot line. If I recall, this is needed to run VMWare.
